Can't recall this much rain in August. Hopefully it equates to lower EHD outbreaks and good growing conditions for crops and food plots as well as a good mast crop. Of course mother nature can turn off the rain at any time but I for am enjoying it while it last.

yeah the rain is kind of screwing me right now. Hopefully that first weekend in Sept will be dry so I can get down and finish planting my plots. I was going to go down this weekend but looks like rain in the forecast for Sat so not sure what I am going to do.

I got mine in before all this rain. It was a tad bit early some plants, but did it all while I was at it. Fall plots sure are a lot easier than the spring ones can be. I'll do better next year as I'll know more what is a weed or a plant.

What did or are you planting this year?

What did or are you planting this year? Well, thank you for asking. I had a smaller plot last fall for the first time. It did marginally well, but I wanted to feed the deer year around, so I added a spring plot. I mostly plant Whitetail Institute with anything I plant, but have planted other brands. It seemed that my deer had never tried some of the things that I planted and were a little unsure of them, or hadn't acquired a taste for them ...specifically, turnips. I didn't plant them this year, but other deer go crazy for them. They didn't seem to go crazy over my oats either. They did go crazy over the cheap buckwheat ...go figure. Anyway, this spring, I planted chufa, Power Plant (sweet peas, soy beans, sunflowers...) They loved the sunflower plants as they were growing. They can decimate a sunflower plot before it can mature. I also planted sugar beets, perennial clover and some other perennials. However, I didn't know what some of it was supposed to look like. Even the weeds in the clover, I thought might be some of the other added plants. Needless to say, the weeds got too high in my beets, chufa and in much of my clover. The clover was very resilient and recovered after I cut it and sprayed for weeds. The beets and others were not so fortunate. I did plant some more chufa, but really think I got them in too late. It doesn't bother me in the least to fail in anything as long as I learn something, and I learned a lot this year. Recently, I planted Winter Greens, and Ambush. Lots of different plants in these mixes. All along, I fed the deer corn to keep them from eating everything before it got mature. I fed a lot of fat coons too. I was blessed enough to buy all the equipment needed for my plot, so if you need to use any of it, or help putting one it, you are more than welcome.

Thank you for the response. I also planted this spring ( normally I plant in the fall ) because i also planted sugar beets along with clover, turnips etc. This was my first attempt at sugar beets after reading up on them. Wasn't sure if they would produce in southern Indiana. Jury is still out on that but they are coming up nicely. Planted their own plot because read where they dont like to compete with other plants. As it turns out I just recieved permission to hunt 160 acres 5 minutes from home, so my food plots an hour away wont get much attention from me this year. Good luck on the plots, they can be a pain at times.

And the RAIN continues... We missed a lot of the earlier rain this week in Switzerland County but are making up for it. Right at 5" for the week so far.

This rain is definitely a great thing when discussing EHD.
As for rest of plans...I don't mind hanging stands in the rain and actually prefer it for scent reasons. However, only 1 of our 3 properties with any food plots got planted, and it was the smallest of the 3. Hopefully the rain subsides and things can be planted before Labor Day weekend which is when I try to have NOTHING to do in the woods at all, save maybe one overseeding of cereal grains into plots (Oat/Rye/Wheat).

Soft mast are looking good, while out squirrel hunting I found a persimmon tree full of persimmons a few had already fallen. Should have took a picture. I have another deer hunting area in a persimmon grove I'm going to try to make it there this weekend.

We got another 2.5" yesterday. It's been spotty. My little particular area of Cass county has been good. We've had nice rains of 1"+ for about three weeks straight, while folks a few miles away were completely missed and dry until yesterday.
Planted food plots the first of the month when things were pretty dry and rain started shortly thereafter. Can't ask for better conditions to get the plots off to a good start.

I hate weather forecasts! Yesterday I looked at the 7 day forecast and it looked like I had a break in all the rain so I took next Monday and Tuesday off to go plant my plots and now today depending on the weather site you use there is rain in it for Sunday and Monday! I hope they are wrong.

I don't think anyone of them forecasts the weather. They just read the models. Maybe called, "Map Readers"

If the weather models don't come into some sort of "agreement", you'll hear the terms..."it's a complicated forecast"...or...."this is a now casting event".
And both of those really mean....we don't have a clue, so look @ the radar yourself and see what's happening.

I was at the Kokomo Country club at a Insurance Company Outing Wed afternoon. Over 200 Indiana Farmers Mutual agents and home office staff present when course took a direct hit from EF3 TORNADO. Luckily they had a basement, as course is near a total loss... There wasn't a forecast or a hint of severe weather until about 30 minutes prior to hitting us. (Just light rain). Am happy to be talking to you today I tell you. Weathermen don't always get it right.... Am planting a fall plot this evening on a more positive note.

The NWS, the Weather Channel and the local meteorologists all missed this. How? I heard one of the local weather people here say that the models didn't show this occurring.
