I used a .243 for a few years and then switched to .308 on my Encore pistol. A .308 is not a heavy kicking round unless someone is very small or frail. The .243 would kill a deer but a lot ran farther than the .308 after the hit. My farmer friend in Indiana told me "your problem is you are hunting full grown deer here with a groundhog gun". LOL I will have my 30.06 Winchester Model 70 next year the Good Lord willing. I picked up a used 30-06 Winchester M70 this year. I haven't shot it yet, but if it shoots as good as it looks ...woooooohooooooo! My FFL guy really liked it. I guess I don't know much about different rifles. He mentioned why he liked it, but it went over my head. If it goes BANG, I like it. I gave away my Remington 300 Win Mag to a friend of mine. I would have never bought it, but took it in on a trade for an ATV. I really had no use for it as it was too much for the area I hunt. I hope the Good Lord is willing and blesses you with a nice one.

I agree that a perfect heart or double lung shot is the only way to go. Things do happen though. I myself am very proficient with a weapon. I was high shooter at Parris Island USMC in 1976 shooting a .223 at 200, 300, and 500 meters with open sights at a man target. Expert in rifle and handgun. Still pretty fair shot. I am always open to a good wager LOL Shot many many deer in many states with bow, crossbow, pistol, ML, and rifle. I have NEVER used a semiauto. Single shot, bolt, or pump. Have I ever had one get away? Sure have. Anyone that hasn't has not shot many. Point I was making is that a .308 does not have a hard kick and the ballistics are much better than a .243 so why go underpowered. That is all I was saying...... I agree with you ncmountainman i have shot a lot of deer with both and without a doubt regardless of were you hit them the 308 puts them down better that is why i use one for work. learn to handload ,load it down for a 100 yd woodland stalking load it up for longer range stuff the 308 has not won all those long range competitions by luck it is very accurate out to sensible deer ranges and way beyond for paper. I would not go back to a 243 given the choice. regards Billy

I don't know what all the fuss is about, I was able to down a deer at 200yds with a slug. But I plan to use my .300blk AR pistol unless I get a chance at some private land. Then I have the option of using my AKs or SKS's in 7.62x39sp or one of my many Mosin Nagants using the 7.62x54r sp round & if I was to go with that round I could use my an old Romanian PSL, it is good out to 400yds easy. But I'll probably go with this .300 blk rifle Decisions, Decisions! LOL

Well I have always said only in Indiana do we put a rifle cartridge in a pistol and a pistol cartridge in a rifle. But finally not this year. The good old 308 will be in a rifle and my hand cannon.

Nope that "arm brace" is to never touch a shoulder It's a legal rifle now, so why can't a stock be put on it to hunt?

Nope that "arm brace" is to never touch a shoulder It's a legal rifle now, so why can't a stock be put on it to hunt? I think if a regular stock was on it, it would be considered a "Short-Barreled Rifle" due to barrel length. From my understanding, the HPR bill stated a 16" barrel length. So it has to remain a "pistol," or a longer barrel would need to be added as well. Silly, ?

I want to file a formal complaint. If a child is born male, but can legally use the little girls room as a man then a gun born pistol should be legal to wear a stock.

It is only in Indiana with our mixed up laws. And the thing you are calling a stock is a SIG brace, totally legal. When it first came on the market the BATF stated it was legal no matter how it was used. But there was so much confusion & so many jumping on the bandwagon trying to evade the SBR(short barreled rifle)laws that the BATF changed their mind. Then stated that if it was shouldered being used as a stock it would be considered a SBR & would require a lot of paperwork and a $200 tax fee. I hunt with it using a 150 gr SP round, this gives enough recoil to split your nose open from the charging handle if shouldered. So I can't shoulder it & keep my nose. It has a 8.5" barrel & will hold a hard ball sized group at 150yds if I do my part. The main reason I'm using this gun is, I'm old & can't hunt back in the deep woods with my heavy slug gun. By the time I walk back to the hunting area in the public woods carrying my slug gun, I'm exhausted & don't feel like hunting. This gun is lightweight & can easily be carried with all my equipment in my backpack.

UMM why is your charging handle moving when you fire or are you refering to the gun moving enough to hit your nose?

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I ended up going with a tikka t3 lite in 308. Being only a 6 lb rifle the recoil was a lil heavy but I put a limbsaver recoil pad on it and now it's cozy to shoot lol. PS these tikka rifles are sweet! They're made by sako rifles out of Finland which is owned by Beretta.

Now get out and find the best load and practice any possible shot you may take, proficiency creates success. Good luck!
