Didn't take long to have an accident. Alamo, IN – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a hunting accident that occurred in Southwestern Montgomery County this morning. One hunter was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Crawfordsville with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the face and shoulder. Jeremy Phillips, 37, of Crawfordsville was turkey hunting along a farm field near Jim Davis Bridge. Phillips had set up some decoys along the edge of the field and was attempting to call in a turkey. David Dawson, 31, of Ladoga was also turkey hunting in the same area. Dawson noticed the decoys, but had mistaken them for actual turkeys. Dawson took a shot from across the field at the decoys. Dawson then began stalking the decoys. Phillips had gotten up after he noticed his decoys had been shot at. Dawson came in from the back side of the decoys and fired a single shot at the decoys striking Phillips, who was in the field beyond the decoys. It is strongly advised to never stalk a turkey. The hunter should identify the target and what is beyond it. A complete list of turkey hunting safety tips can be found at www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2710.htm This case will be sent to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Why I think it's a bad idea to fan or carry a decoy towards a bird. Never know who else is around.
