When I started deer hunting in the early/mid 80's if someone had told me that 30 years later people would willingly spend $1,000+ for a bow, grow food just to feed the deer, spend as much money on a gas powered golf cart as a nice truck would cost, and hang expensive cameras outside in the weather to inventory and pattern the local bucks, I would have said that there is no way people would do such crazy...ok stupid, things....
And I would obviously have been wrong.
The truth is, people have always been obsessed with antlers. We've just taken it to a whole different, multi-billion dollar level and I don't see it changing. If anything, I just see the costs associated with this obsession continuing to escalate.....

I agree. I generally don't even get involved in deer hunting discussions with friends anymore. Get tired of all the talk about nothing but big bicks.
Maybe my one friend is right....if I would let the does walk by instead of shooting them I would see a big buck, but then again I am eating them not taking them to the taxidermist.
Luckily I don't have to validate my manhood by how big of a buck I shoot.

I agree. I have a buddy that we did a lot of crappie fishing with. he now does all the tournaments. Has a big fancy boat, sponsors, and all the new high tech gear. I went out with him and boy...it just wasn't the same. He plum took the enjoyment right out of it. so..yes I can relate to the big deer stuff myself. My uncle now. That's all I hear. Big buck,big buck. I just hunt and put meat in the freezer.

On more than one occasion, I've shot does and continued to sit in the tree, only to shoot a buck minutes later. If a buck is trailing or looking for does, a gun shot isn't going to run him off. Besides, the less does you have running around, the more a buck has to walk around looking, which equates to better chances of seeing him. If you have 100 does, a buck doesn't have to walk far to find one. Cut it down to 5 does, and he has to walk all over the property to find them. |

While I wouldn't pass on shooting a big buck, I'm more interested in putting a couple of deer in the freezer, which means does in this 1 buck state. I'd be willing to guess it has been 3-4 years since I've shot a buck.
One year I got trail cams pics of a really, really nice buck, and passed on everything I saw waiting on him. I ended up shooting a doe the last day of late archery season just to have something in the freezer. That was the last year I horn hunted.

I'm all in it for the meat but I get excited seeing THE BIG ONE...and who wouldn't? Can't tell me anyone goes to the woods not HOPEING to see a giant, doesn't mean they are horn hunters. For those that are horn hunter, more power to you, if that's what makes it fun for you that's cool...to each his own.

It's a sign of good times. If we have the luxury to buy these things and brag about antler size, plant deer food over human food...now if we were in bad times we would be eating turnips instead of letting them rot in a food plot!

Here is meat on the table ,antlers are just a bonus.

I agree with a lot of thoughts in this thread, they are much inline with my mode of thinking. Year after year I have not really cared which type of deer I see/shoot at, just as long as I see one. And this year is the first year that I've taken one to get mounted, not because I ruthlessly hunted him. However it was quite the opposite, he almost walked on top of me.
Me and my hunting companions said this year that we would hold off on shooting the first one or two just to see what they are looking for and how they are moving on a particular day. Not so much in the sense so it will give us a leg up on putting one in the freezer, however I think it is that we have so much respect for this animal that after millennia's of evolution can, even with all of our most sophisticated gadgets we have still manage to elude us.

Before I start rambling, I can say without any doubt hesitation that I have never cared the least bit about shooting a buck. Period. Anyone that knows me will vouch for that. I am a meat hunter and that's it.
I could not agree more. I have all but lost interest in deer hunting due to lack of private land access. I have little doubt that the transformation of deer hunting into and industry has led to this. "Antler envy" is ruining the sport. I place a good part of the blame on the TV guys. They hunt on large, well-managed exclusive properties. The deer are fed via food plot and selected for harvest. Those of us that are not independently wealthy are never going to have access to such land. Just look up Gregg Ritz and the shameful way he was exploiting the largest privately held contiguous piece of land in KY.
I know...knock on enough doors and you'll find places to hunt. Well, not in the part of the state where I live. The days of pitching a little hay or weed eating fence lines to earn hunting permission are over. I'm sure this still holds true in very rural areas, but not here. If you are not family or a lease holder, public land is about the only option. That's fine, but GOOD public land is about an hour away. Overcrowded and rough public land is plentiful, but I'm not interested. Sub-urban areas and bordering counties harbor a good number of hunters, but little options for hunting. It was NOT like this 15 years ago.

For someone to believe that "If I can't hunt good private ground I don't have a place worth going to then" idea. I'm not calling you lazy I'm not saying the way you hunt is wrong but to think that there is no good public ground worth going to is flat out ludicrous. I'll gladly drive an hour to two hours to hunt public ground. No there's not a monster behind every tree but there are monsters on public ground and more does than can fill ten freezers you just have to put the work and time in, you won't learn the property in a year, maybe not even two but by the third year you'll be killing deer consistently. |

By being a member for some time i think i can tell you all how to eliminate all deer hunting issues its a secret i only tell friends so be honoured.
STOP WORRYING WHAT THE NEXT MAN IS DOING,WHAT HE IS SHOOTING, WHERE HE IS DOING IT OR HOW HE IS DOING IT.
IF IT LEGAL IT DOESNT MATTER ONE JOT TO YOU.
Go out do it your way and turn your deaf aid off as i frequently do.
Thats the secret so dont spread it.
And if beermaker does not want to travel for his sport that is also up to him.

I ask the following question to anyone that says they only hunt for meat. Would you support raising whitetails as livestock for food purposes, just like beef and pork? Why or why not? I would not have a problem with some one raising deer for the sale of meat. Would I buy it no. I am a tight wad. I hunt to fill my freezer and I enjoy the hunting.it gives me something to do and gets me out in nature. I have hunted 30 + years and have only had 2 different guns to hunt with. If my bow would not have been stolen (and I could still shoot one) I would still be hunting with a 25 year old bow. I still have and use the same first hunter orange toboggan I got when I started hunting. So the cost for me to hunt is not much |
