Does anyone know what the current required heights are for cervid farm/shooting preserve fencing?
What about the new bill's fence height requirements?

I don't know what it is but I had a friend of mine hire me to put up 500 yards of fence 12 feet high. He said they won't jump over 12.

The fence height has always been 8 ft and the new bill is 8 ft. The height has been a discussion for a long time and I'll explain from first hand experience. If a deer was in a pen the size of your living room and a dog came up to it the deer would attempt to jump the fence until it killed itself or somehow made it over. A deer will always take the path of least resistance. The general answer is no a deer can't jump 8 ft. I back that up by saying I know guys with breeder bucks worth $100,000 in pens 8ft tall, if they could jump 8ft I assure you they would raise it to 9 or 10.

OK. I could swear that one of those PBS type of shows said whitetail could clear an 8 foot fence.
Is there anything about double fencing?

If a wild buck could jump an 8 ft fence they would do so to get to a bunch of does in heat on a game farm. There's no way a farmer gonna risk everything on a wild buck breeding his does, much less chance a wild buck getting in to fight his breeder buck. Im not saying it's impossible, but highly improbable. The double fencing was a proposal designed to make it to expensive to build a hunting preserve, nothing to do with addressing a problem.

Most guys see deer jump 6 ft fence and think it's 8ft. Think of it as fort knox, you can bet whatever means they have to keep people out they use, if they needed more they would have it. Farmers have millions and millions of dollars to lose but yet they use 8ft to protect themselves, much more credible than someone saying what they saw and draw a definite conclusion. Same as the double fence issue, both the gamers and the animal health experts testified and debunked the double fence. It didn't help the opposition when emails surface discussing the strategy of making any and all proposals that would make it too expensive and too cumbersome to do business.

I wasn't trying to start an argument. The elk farm I've been on has 12' and yesterday I noticed the deer farm in my county has 8'. It just seemed odd to me.
I would worry more about the river flooding taking out the deer farm fence before anything else.

Anybody remember when Cristiano da Matta hit a deer at Road America in 2006? espn.go.com/rpm/news/story?seriesId=5&id=2539326I guarantee Cristiano doesn't: "The impact knocked da Matta unconscious and he was airlifted to Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wis., for emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma -- a ruptured blood vessel on the surface of the brain." ... Road America media director Julie Sebranek said she had never heard of a similar incident at the track. "The race track has been here for 50 years. It's highly, highly unusual," Sebranek said Friday. An eight-foot chain link fence topped with barbed wire circles the 628-acre property, which is surrounded by wooded terrain and farm fields. When asked how the deer got onto the property, Sebranek said: "They have been known to jump the eight-foot fences."

Go to the Sports Show and ask convicted felon Russ Bellar how high fences are. He's smiling and laughing right across from the IDHA scoring booth. Disgusting.

Don't know how high big oaks is and not going to get into this argument but I've seen a doe clear it. Now I will say she started clear across a cut bean field and was kicking it into high gear half way across. She started quite a bit away and did clear the fence. Now the doe that was with her didn't have her wits about her, jumped way sooner than she should have and bounced off the fence full throttle. She was knocked silly for a bit but shook it off and continued running down the fence. Id guess most seen probably clear it at a high spot.

I'd say the end result for a lot of deer that try to clear 8ft plus high fences ends up something like this. I guess technically he did get over on the other side though, lol.

Considering the profit margins and rediculous fees, I think you all can afford a double fence. Might even slow down the fence cutters
