I went to bass pro yesterday and bought a fly rod and some flys.
Does anybody know any tricks for a beginner. The guy at bass pro was helpful with getting flys for large and smallmouth bass. Bluegill and crappie and white/stripped bass.
Thanks for any help.

You might be able to throw both bass and bluegill flies on the same rod/reel/line combo, but it will be hard. Like throwing swim baits on a bluegill rod or casting 1/16th oz. jigs on a bass rod.
What weight set up did you get? What do you have for a leader?

As a fly tyer and a rod builder, I too have a few questions and suggestions. First, where are you located? If you are near Indy I'd be happy to walk you through the process of basic casting. This may sound funny, but we would start (as practiced in most Trout Unlimited shools) by learning to cast in a parking lot or large lawn area. We start with no flies (hooks). As esshup asks, what weight rod and line and how long is the rod? What flies and number, (ie, #18 flying ant or #12 wooly bugger, etc.)? Learning to fly fish is awesome IMO. Most of my intro to flycasting has been a #3-5 weight rod using #10-14 foam spiders This action is topwater at its best for "panfish." There are some pretty good instructionals on Youtube. Mostly, remember to keep a tight loop, minimize wrist action and watch your backcast!

I'm south of Connersville on Fayette Franklin county line. If you know where bear creek boy scout camp is you know where I live.
My rod is a white river silver doctor 9ft #8. It was a combo kit. The leader is 9# I think.
Flys are 1. Clouser's tan/white skinny water minnow size 06 2. Glass bunny white 1/0 3. Chartreuse mini me's popper 2/0 4. White wooly bugger 08 5. Gurgling shrimp 1/0 6. Fleeing crayfish 06

Save the leader for fishing, use straight mono for practice. Use some yarn tied on the end of the mono to imitate a fly. Mono won't roll over as easily as a tapered or a furled leader, making it a bit harder to cast properly, but once you learn to cast with mono the leader will make it seem really easy. Every once in a while check the leader. If you see a knot in it, remove it asap or it'll be impossible to remove. Learn how to tie a nail knot. www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php#ScrollPoint Practice, practice, practice. If your fly line is a floating fly line and you don't have fly line dressing, buy a bottle. It will get dirty practicing on the lawn or parking lot.

Good point esshup! Knots, knots and more knots! For the first 4 hours of the last Trout Unlimited school I attended, they had us sit and tie the major knots. As mentioned, the Nail knot...and we also had to master the Albright, Arbor, Blood, Improve Clinch and Perfection! And that was before we were allowed to progress to the lawn! Also, you have a fairly heavy weight rod and that is probably because you keyed in on largemouth and smallmouth bass. You can still catch panfish with this setup. Just note that you need to get at least 15 or so yards of line out in front of you to effectively cast. My guess is they set you up with a weight forward floating line. Most beginners make comments like "it feels like I'm casting in slow motion" compared to spinning combos and baitcasters!

I know a lot of knots at least more than the average person. One of the perks of being an eagle scout. Just need practice them.
Thanks high cotton guide and esshup. That knot tying site is awesome.

I have it bookmarked. It's not just for fishing, there are a lot of other knots on there that come in handy in the other categories.
