i am just curious what kind of money people are getting and paying for hunting lease ground [per acre] ?

Not really sure what the going rate is for leasing a piece of land for hunting. I guess it depends on where it is located. Personally I am against leasing, as I grew up in a time where all one needed to do is ASK permission from a landowner/farmer inorder to hunt. <The Good 'ole Days>

the property i have in greene county went for $1200, that is 400 acres of ground i would say almost half in woods by looking at arial photo

My small club pays $6.00/acre with a $1 Million insurance policy included with the lease. We lease about 500 acres of 90% wooded ground. I'd say this is an avreage price for my area minus the provided insurance, that was a bonus perk.

$3 to $4 is the going rate - NOW.

Personally I am against leasing, as I grew up in a time where all one needed to do is ASK permission from a landowner/farmer inorder to hunt. <The Good 'ole Days> i agree but the good old days are over !!! if you can get ground you need to snag it because if you dont someone else will!!!!! thats exactly what the landowner told me when i was told that i had to lease or loose the land i hunt now beacause if i didnt want to pay for rights that he had a line of people that would and it didnt leave me much choice if i wanted to keep hunting the same area !! otherwise i had no place to hunt !! |

Maybe you should not be so greedy and hunt for free.
Have you offered to help them pay taxes on the land you hunt, fix a fence, clear some brush, anything?
Landowners have spent alot of money to buy and maintain the land that you hunt on for free...help them so next year your hunting land isnt a subdivision.
sorry but greed is not the corect word you should use.

One place I hunt on, here in Indiana, three generations of my family have hunted there. ....And you're WRONG some landowners ARE Greedy, but thank GOD most are not! |

The land that I primarily for deer is owned or farmed buy the same guy. There are two propertys. I share 130 acres with another 2 hunters that the guy farms for his sister and brother-in-law. I also hunt 80 acres next to his home that I have for myself. Whenever I need a half of beef or a pig I purchase it from him, about one each a year. I also buy 300-400 bale of hay per year from him for my horses.I never ever drive my truck on his fields,thats why I always keep my deer cart in the back of my truck. I always take summer sausage to him and his brother-in-law when I harvest a deer always get at least 2 deer. He has always made it clear that he wanted deer population controld so I take does or a buck when they present themselves. If he thinks something wierd is going on at his sisters place that is not very visable to anyone in his family ,I go tresspasser hunting and collect licence plate numbers and vehicle desriptions for him. I give him the information and he or the law can take it from there. One more thing to remember is that farmers work very hard for what they have. Its their name at the bank or on the lease. I know this farmer works at the factory with me plus farms raises pigs,cows and goats. I guess its an unspoken lease,I hope it never comes to a written lease.

that is the whole reason mine came down to lease is that people were crossing the fences [knocking them down to get 4 wheelers across ] and hunting without ever asking anyone ..at fisrt the land owner looked past it but when the fences started getting torn down all the time he final got  ed and told me lease it and police it to keep tresspassers out of loose it and its the oly place i have to hunt anymore it wasnt greed it was need !!alot of farmer are on a prety tight budget and cant afford to fix or run new fences or replace stock killed of injured by tresspasser i wouldnt call it greed .. |

I know a Farmer who had six of his cattle shot by hunters and that ended ALL Hunting on his land. Couldn't blame him either and I supported his decission. |

As far as the landowners being greedy, who would flat turn down thousands of dollars a year just so the good ole boy who has hunted the farm for years can still hunt...not many, if any. We did nothing wrong and had excellent relations with the land owner. However when someone waives $20,000+ in his face...what do you think happened? We were able to hunt this land again this year only because the lease was signed late and no hunters leased from basecamp. I'm hoping things will not go well and we will be able to get back in there for good. A couple of years of no one shooting Does and throw in some "hunters" not really apprecaitive of his land... Unfortunately basecamp has put a price on the land and this landowner now knows there are people out there who will pay him to hunt on his land. Most will not pay what basecamp is asking, but someone will pay to hunt it. I believe as most that leasing is a very bad thing that we can all look forward to. |

Hoepfully you will get it back, but I would guess that the price you will pay will go up.
Hunting leases will become a way of hunting life. We will pay..
OR hunt public ground
OR just flat quit.

The farm is over 3000 acres but the money basecamp is asking is unbelieveable. It's good property, but not the best I've been on. They split it up into several smaller leases. A couple of them are just plain false advertising ! I hope (kinda) that if someone pays to hunt 2 or 3 of the leases offered they look at it first. One is nothing more than 100 + acres with 2 fence rows running through it. "plenty of room to spread out" is what basecamp says about it ! Another has a drainage ditch running through it and it talks about it being a waterfowlers paradise ! I've never seen a duck or goose on it. Still another says it would be good for a father son team. It again is nothing more than fence rows and edges of someone elses woods.
Leasing also plays into the whole antlerless tag b.s.
The state sets antlerless goals and people from out of state or people leasing in general don't weant to shoot Does on property the are paying for in hopes of tagging a stud wall hanger.
Basecamp touts Parke county Indiana as the next Pyke county IL...Unfortunately with the leasing going on, I believe at least that part of it to be true. Getting permission to hunt without paying will soon become a thing of the past.
