Already commented on this. Not happy. One of the best kept secrets in Indiana to run beagle dogs. It will be bare ground very shortly. Shame.

Pretty sure idnr would just let us sit out there until we got bored. Especially since the DNR doesn't own the land. Now Peabody might have a thing or two to say about it.

Wonder how much it cost to get the property out of lease?

Wonder how much it cost to get the property out of lease? Probably none. If I understand correctly, most of those leases are long term open ended, low compensation.

Peabody Coal is not in good shape. The coal market is depressed. Rumor has it that they have terminated about all ground that was under lease. I heard from a good source that several acres in Warick county that has been leased for hunting rights will be terminated. I'm betting this ground will be for sale to the public in the near future. We lost close to 400 acres two years ago that we leased from Peabody. It was sold or to traded to individuals for ground that they owned that Peabody wanted to mine.

That is a shame. My brother and I went down a couple of times with our beagles. Last quail I shot was there.

Peabody still allows public hunting on tens of thousands of acres in western Kentucky. As of right now.... They used to allow hunting on about 3x as much as they do now.

Hopefully they still continue to provide public access in most areas moving forward.

I used to have a place to hunt down in the Sullivan area. When I first started hunting the property, the area around it was part of Minnehaha. Within a year or two the adjacent property was sold, then the next piece of property over was sold. All of the reclaimed area is for sale now. If anyone (who has the assets) wants to get a good piece of hunting ground with stocked stripped pits, check out Peabody Recreational Lands ... and invite me down to hunt and fish since I gave you the tip!
