Hello all! I am building a couple wooden deer stands with 4'x4' platforms. I am looking for the best options for keeping my movement quiet while shuffling around on it and something with a non-slip grip. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I always heard some old carpet is the way to go. I'm guessing you could just nail it down to make sure it doesn't slip and make you bust your butt and when it gets too gross, just pull it up and replace it with a new piece.

Possibly some artificial turf...

The artificial turf is too noisy..

If you treat the deck boards and allow plenty of space and slight slope they won't be slippery really. Outdoor carpet will work but I wouldn't leave it mounted all year it will be torn up by various critters and will cause premature rot on the platform itself. Plus you could build a roof and sides and help with the traction and comfort

Are you talking about actual elevated treestands or wooden box blinds? Just a word of caution, elevated wooden stands deteriorate from the moment they are placed in the tree. Please keep safety as the top priority.

Elevated wooden stands - freestanding stands - in my opinion should be made from treated lumber and built like a house to shed water.
If you are talking about a platform attached to a tree, don't do it. Tree movement in the wind will loosen up fasteners quickly.
While heavy, a ribbed stall mat or something like that will keep things pretty quiet. If an enclosed box blind, then any carpet would do, but I wouldn't nail it down to the floor, I'd roll it up and stand it in the corner when I was done. Carpet can get wet and frozen, and then noisy.
If it's not an enclosed box blind, the dang squirrels will chew it up in a short amount of time.

If I was building one on the side of the tree I would use a method similar to how they are attaching Tree houses these days

In my shooting houses I use those rugs they have in entry ways like at Wal Mart or farm stores. Rubber on the back and thin like carpet on top. My chair wheels will roll right over it and it is very quiet.

I can't think of any surface that would be quiet once it gets snow and ice on it. I put a hinged cover on my old home made ladder stand and it would help some. If it snowed while I was in it the snow would pack and be slippery.

If they will be enclosed just use any carpet you want (got my two pieces of 4'x8' free). But if it is not going to be weatherproof go with outdoor carpeting and get it off the platform as soon as you are finished hunting for the season.

I would not put any type of carpet on the platform. If you do,take it off during the off season. Leaving it on would keep your stand wet longer after a snow or rain and decrease the life of your stand quite a bit.

It will be a wooden deer stand, not enclosed. All treated lumber will be used. They will be built in 3 sections, ladder and then the platform and bench seats. The sections will be secured with stainless steel bolts. The base of the ladder will rest on solid concrete blocks. I already have a dedicated ratchet/socket for my gear bag to ensure the bolts are tight. The stand will be given a slight lean rearward towards the trees to help shed water. Stainless "U" bolts will be used on the ladder and platform to make it easier to utilize the 400 lbs rated straps that will secure it to the tree. I will be drilling bolts out of the rear of the platform that will be leaning against the tree to help "bite" the tree as i secure the straps. I haven't quite decided whether i'll stain the stands or not.

Yah nix the carpet then. I thought he was talking about an enclosed one.

Yah nix the carpet then. I thought he was talking about an enclosed one. Yeah, anything (snow or ice) frozen to it will only make more noise.

One suggestion, do not put Water Seal on the wood. Just rebuilt a part of my deck and sealed it. I used treated lumber. It holds beaded water on it and it freezes. An exciting exit out my back door. Agreed on the carpet. Don't use it. I have an 8'x 8'stand all built from treated lumber. 12'high. In cold and snowy weather it does get slippery up there but I have rails at 36" surrounding the platform. So I climb in and get in my seat and remember it is slippery. You might consider shooting rails as I did. Gives some more security. Plus my rails have green tarp all around to block me getting busted. Helps to hide you and block scent.
