Any pecan tree growers on here? I have planted 2 over the summer. Curious on how they fair during winter and good fertilizer for spring.

They are slooooooooow. Planted 2 about 10 years ago. They were about 12 inches. Now there about the size of my wrist. About 30 more years and I will be making me a pie.

I have 4 growing in my back area. I got one free from my daughter's school on arbor day 2 yrs ago. It is doing great.
I bought 3 more last spring and I hope they pull through....all survived but not as strong.
I was told it takes 15 yrs to get nuts but others have said much shorter than that

Also you need at least 2 for pollination needs

This was on here before. I have 3. 2 of which are prob. 30 feet tall and over a foot across at trunk. Ended up getting 7 or so 5 gallon bucket full on nuts after it was all said and done. They don't take 30 years. You can get some that take as little as 5 years. www.starkbros.com/products/nut-trees/pecan-trees

Thanks guys. The lady I got them from said hers took 7 years to produce. After I dug them up and transplanted them theywent into a bit of shock which was expected. By the time summer was ending and fall was here they both had new leaves and some new growth. Left me feeling pretty optimistic.

My two pecan trees were here when I built in 1986. They've produced every year, but I never collect any pecans. The squirrels cut it before any drop...and that's OK by me.

Transplant shock should be expected with about any kind of nut tree since they seem to develop more tap root than most trees. Actually I'm almost surprised that you were able to keep both trees alive! Congrats!!!

I have 2 in my side yard which historically produced, however I had to cut one of them down this year. Had a bad spot in the base of it, sounded hollow when I thumped it with a hammer. Plus it was leaning towards the house. OH well I guess I get to look forward to splitting it this spring to burn next winter. I would like to plant a small grove of them though just to see if I can raise them until they produce.

Just as a side note for all of you who use smokers-I've found pecan wood to probably be one of the best woods so far for putting in the smoker....puts out a lighter smoke flavor than hickory. My whole problem is that there are not a lot of pecans up in my area for me to get wood from. Sooo....Bartiks you may have a sought after commodity for those in the area with smokers!

Stark Bros. sells some fert. just for these trees. My production went way up when I started using it. You would not believe how much better these nuts taste than the store bought. I can set there and just eat them like candy. I would hate to see how many I lost to tree rats.
