That is really bad news to hear. I feel really sorry for the 600 workers that will loose their jobs.

It's just the tip of the iceberg. Going to get worse from what I've been told.

Meeting I just came from didn't tell us any more than the news articles are.
Closing first quarter, March 24 goal, no guarantees about how the transfers will wirk, if contract will be honored, any kind of severance..they kept answering It's a process. They say this is the first step and negotiations with the union will begin now.

I spent 29 years there and most of it was in Smelting so this strikes home pretty hard. I know how hard you guys work there and there just isn't that many good paying jobs left anywhere. I guess all we can do is wait and see how this all plays out and pray for the best.

Very Bad News for the Warrick County, not to mention the Evansville area. So I guess they are going to Mexico or China?? My Brother-In-Law's Father worked many years at ALCOA, before he passed away. You might have known him, Woody.

It's just the tip of the iceberg. Going to get worse from what I've been told. It will become worse. I wonder what this closing will do to those employees that have a Home Mortgage or car payment, not to mention a family to support. How will this affect retirement income for those retired from ALCOA??

He did tell me though that some of the miners that were near retirement went to upper management and asked if they would opt out early if they could then give those jobs to some of the guys that were let go. Management agreed to it although I'm not sure how many it helped. Awesome story and those miners really have each others backs. The present leadership in this country on both sides of the aisle and NAFTA have destroyed so many jobs and given them to oversea and over boarder workers its ridiculous.

N.A.F.T.A. & G.A.T.T. have destroyed this country's manufacturing to produce products. This happened to FRUIT OF THE LOOM factory in Campbellsville, KY, back around 1995.

This will have far reaching affects not only for the employees affected but also Warrick Co.. With the declining demand for coal and the closing of several mines and now this, our property taxes will likely take a large hike. I'm sure there are several local supporting industries who will also suffer because of this.

The ship isn't sinking, I think this is more of a modernization plan. ALCOA has recently made huge investments in their plants at Lafayette and LaPorte including large expansions at each facility and hundreds of million dollars worth of new casting lines and equipment.
Guessing the technology at Warrick County plant is a bit dated?

Guessing the technology at Warrick County plant is a bit dated? I'll agree with that to a point but the guys that are pulling the coal out of the ground are losing their jobs too. There isn't a lack of consumption of coal, just a lack of consumption of coal manufacturing in the US. Plenty is shipped across our boarders. As far as shutting down facilities. It's all a great plan. Don't have a problem with cleaning up the environment. Here is where it falls apart. One, how long are other forms of energy going to last? Nuclear is a no no with environmentalists, how many windmills can be put up and they cost per profit on those takes generations to come to fruit. We are still shipping coal overseas and across the boarder, to countries that have way less restrictions than we do so in all actuality we are doing more damage than good. Worse air quality and less U.S. jobs.

THIS IS INDEED VERY SERIOUS FOR FOLKS, LOSING THEIR JOBS AT THE TIME OUR STOCK MARKET & ECONOMY IS TANKING!!!!!!!!! How on Earth are these folks going to deal, with outstanding bills, & survive with the loss of their jobs at ALCOA or other factories going the same way?? This can & will destroy the economies of these communities. <VERY SERIOUS> Those losing their jobs and who have to make home/car payments will be in a world of HURT!!

Well Prayers for All that will be effected by this, and prayers for a job to come your way. It is very hard to get layed off, but to be told you are loosing your job completly, that really hurts. It messes with your mind also. I just hope things work out for all those up there and hang in there.

Guessing the technology at Warrick County plant is a bit dated? Modernization. It's alcoa turning it's back on what made them because they see more $$$ in their finished product than keeping the actual production of aluminum in America. Anyone remember what ALCOA actually stands for? The government has made it impossible for it to stay profitable PERIOD. Warrick had a good thing going, our own power plant, smelter and finishing side. As a whole we MADE MONEY. Should have left it alone but greed makes them only see how much they stand to make by giving up on the Smelter side. During our meeting they told us how it'll take 50 mil to get our ring furnace where it needs to be and no one wants to invest the money. They conveniently left out how much money is going into the other side to bring it up to speed to let the new Alcoa continue without our metal.
