Hey I am new to the area and looking for a decent spot to deer hunt during the upcoming rifle season. I have spent a bunch of time hunting on the east coast and in CO, but IN is new to me. Can anyone give me some suggestions of good public lands. I am in Munster, but willing to drive an hour or so. Any help would be great.

Indiana doesn't exactly have a rifle season. With gun season a week away you might have an extremely hard time finding a place, even on public ground. Don't forget, you must have lived here 60 days and have an Indiana I.D. before you can purchase a resident license.

Why is it hard to find a place on public ground? Because Indiana only has about 3% public land statewide, and the few places we do have tend to be crowded. I used to use topo maps to find smaller, less well known parcels to hunt before I bought some property. You'd be surprised how many of them there are, but as they're almost always bordered by private land you have to be absolutely certain of where you are while hunting them. Even then I've been run off of perfectly legal hunting land by adjacent landowners who thought that I was on their property, even though I had a copy of the topo map and GPS coordinates on me at the time.

I live out of state and have been hunting Indiana since the '90s. You really need to read the regs for sure. Basically, you can use a muzzleloader, a shotgun, a rifle that shoots certain pistol or wildcat cartridges, or a pistol that shoots cartridges that meet the requirements specified in the regulations.
I have a Remington 870 with cantilever scope mount, Leupold scope, and a rifled barrel. Shoots Remington Accutips in 2 3/4" extremely well. I primarily use a Thompson Center PISTOL in .308 caliber with a Burris scope.
I have been blessed to have private land to hunt on the entire time I have been hunting in Indiana. NOTE: You may NOT get on (trespass) someone else's land whether it is posted or not NOT EVEN to retrieve game that was shot on property you have permission to be on unless you have permission from that landowner.
Hope this helps you out. But, as has been said, Look up the regulations

Just name a few in your area, there is Willow Slough, Kingsbury, and Jasper-Pulaski. To reiterate, the regulations will be your best place to start. Also, the indiana dnr website has an interactive map that displays public grounds so you get a better perspective to how close they are to your specific location. You should also contact each public properties headquarters for any questions regarding the process to hunt there. Good luck
