Hi all, Just a quick question for everyone, I've been doing some reading on scent control and such and here is my plan to try to cut down on my scent. I will wash my clothes in a detergent that eliminates scent, have to forgive me I can't recall what it is named. After I do that will dry it in the dryer and I've read that you then treat your clothing with carbon. Then can you put Arm and Hammer in the tote with your clothing?
This is where I start to get a little fuzzy on what would be the best approach. I've also heard that if you wash your clothes in a scent control detergent and then put them in a tote and throw a bunch of leaves and some dirt in there and seal it up as to make your clothes smell more like the outside.
Any one have any thoughts or tips on something I may be missing here? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money in accomplishing this. Thanks and god bless.

I wash in unscented detergent (not special hunting kind) and put clothes on a trash bag or tote. I shower with unscented soap and use unscented deodorant.
Other than that, I quit playing the scent control game a few years ago and resigned myself to the fact that, if the wind is wrong, I'm usually going to be busted.
It's actually been a relief to have one less thing to busy myself with. I don't get busted any more or less than I ever did.

I store my gear in a tote with leaves. However, I wash my gear every 5 hunts in early season. If you are looking for a cover scent, I have personally found the earth scent by scent a way to be the best bang for my buck spray throughout the last few years. But if you play the wind correctly, you really need none of the above.

Hang em in the smoke by a camp fire. Covers your scent and deer ignore it.

I use the homemade scent killer. 16 Oz peroxide and 16 Oz distilled water 1/4 cup baking soda and small squirt of hunter specialties. Green soap. I also use earth scent wafers in tub to store. I recently purchased some dirt scent essential oil. On archery talk they said to add one teaspoon per 160z of homemade and it will be same as autumn gold scent killer. Haven't tried it yet but it was just 16 dollars for 8 Oz shipped.

Smoke? Really? Do you have a lot of fires where you hunt? I would think that if it is something new to the area then they would avoid it like the plague.

There likely isn't anywhere in the state where deer cannot smell smoke on any given day in the fall. A human can smell smoke from a loooooong ways away and a deer can smell much better than we can.
I've been using a bee smoker for the past 2 seasons and am pleased with the results.

I use regular household detergent that contains no dyes, perfumes, or UV brighteners. Way cheaper than the hunting stuff. I bag my clothes in large ziplock bags. I shower with "green" soap and use no scent-away sprays or cover scents whatsoever.

My understanding of scent control is as follows.
The deer nose is so much more advanced then our's that cover scent is waste of time. Leaves with your clothes? Perhaps you use fox urine, or apple scent. That means instead of smelling a human alone they smell a human and leaves, and fox urine, and apples. They still smell the human and are alarmed.
The proper way to eliminate human odor is not through masking but elimination and scent killer etc. The scent killer products supposedly break down the human protein in scent into a benign scent. They still smell you, they just are not alarmed by the scent they smell.
If you do the whole nine yards you do the shower, clothe wash, carbon clothes, etc. I don't do all that because I'm lazy. I do the clothing wash, store my clothes in odorless trash bags. I use the deer deodorant and powder, then spray with scent killer.
As others have said always play the wind.

Playing the wind is a great idea that is hard to carry out much of the time. I have one stand, out of 15 or so, that wind direction is a must before hunting the stand. Its on the south property line and I know for a fact any deer I see will be coming from the north. All my other stands are spread throughout the property and deer can, and do, come from any direction. Best I can do with those stands is try to visualize where a deer will likely be standing when I shoot it and go from there. That same deer will possibly come from any direction before standing in that spot though....

Not only is that stuff good for a cover scent- it smells like heaven to me. Lol, idk why but I love that stuff. It makes me feel like a man and stuff and feel like I could sneak up on big foot or something. I refuse to buy the odorless stuff

Nothing for me other than the wood smoke smell. Just hang my clothes from a rack in the garage and let the smoke from the stove do its thing. I kill 5-10 deer every year, even pee out of the stand. Not going to change what has been working for 20+ yrs now.

In my opinion it's all overrated, but I'll use fresh earth scent just for good measure. Deer don't know what human scent is, they just know that they are smelling something not normal. What good would apple scent do in a hardwood forest? The deer would smell apples and human scent, both not normal.
I don't normally do it unless absolutely necessary, but I have peed from the stand and still had deer present. One time I had a real "emergency" and had to climb down and take a crap. I shot a doe within 30 minutes of getting back in the tree. Some people will smoke and still shoot plenty of deer. My buddy won't hunt without a thermos of coffee. The deer must be trying to decide what flavor of cream he used while he takes aim.
I don't have the luxury of being able to chose a stand location based on the wind. I have two stands on public land and will sit the one that I have a good felling about on that particular day.
I'm not saying that scent control is a complete waste of time, but I don't get stressed about it either.

Urine is a VERY normal scent in the woods. I pee in scrapes, I pee out of ground blinds. I pee off tree stands. The only risk in peeing while hunting, imo, is getting busted in the act by moving, standing, or making too much noise.

Interesting, lot of things to take into account. If the first half of gun doesn't go well for me then I think I might try the smoke method and see what happens. As for urinating in the woods during hunting if I absolutely have to go I will either dig me a cat hole and cover it up or try to find a stream, something with running water. My thoughts on that are what little I put in will be diluted in no time to where there is no scent. Just my thoughts on that.

Your pee wil only attract them!. It will not scare deer away. Smoke works

That is why I ALWAYS pee my pants while in the stand. Lol jk jk... As far as scent control for me. I just use scent free detergent, deodorant, and the hunters green body and hair wash because it's cheap anyways. I have some homemade spray I use once I'm out of my truck before entering the field.
