OK so I know one of these pop up every year but I'm just curious about where everyones going to be hunting this year at big oaks? I'm going to be at 28 and I have never stepped foot in the place. I know its a longer drive to get up there but I think it will pay off with it being closer to the non hunting zones. Also was wondering if anyone has had any experience here or any tips? I think I'm going to try to head to the south west area if possible but I am going to keep looking at maps and see what we decide closer to the time. We got drawn for the first hunt which is kinda of a double edge sword I feel like...not as much pressure, but right in the middle of October...anyway just wondering what peoples thoughts are.

It's a crap shoot. Look at the harvest records and it'll give you a good indication. The soft mast yield is a big factor down there. Years with high acorn yields the deer don't tend to move as far. On poor yields if you can find a food source they are hitting it's great.

I'll be in 54 for the first hunt. Never been to 28 but do agree with ukwil about being a crap shoot. I've found the longer I stay in the stand the better I do though. But with bow it's a different game

I just got through for the Oct 24th and 25th bow hunt. Took area 28 So you'll have to let me know how you do. I have hunted 14,33 & 35, killed bucks in 14 & 35 during gun season, bow season is a lot tougher. But its always cool to get in there and hunt and you never know what may come by

What keeps us going back is knowing that you have a real probability of having a big deer step out at anytime. I think last year made 5 or 6 years in a row that I've taken deer out of there. It's always a blast and privilege to be able to go in.

It's my first time there, and I'll be hunting the primitive hunt in a few weeks. I would be shocked to see a buck Oct. 17&18, but I'm sure stranger things have happened. I will be happy to see anything, but would sure like to take a doe with that gun.
I had to stay south as I need as flat as possible to walk any good distance, especially carrying my lunch.

I will have to sleep in my truck, but was more concerned about killing a deer the first day and keeping it cool until I can get it home the next day. Do any of you know where I can buy ice around there?

I have to call back tomorrow to make special arrangements for my handicap. They will put bait out for me. LOL I almost forgot to send in my money for Crane. I was in panic mode when it popped in my mind to do it. It got there in time. Now I just need to remember to go take the safety course at Big Oaks before the hunt. I might need reminded.

How does one find persimmons in the morning darkness? When hunting, do you see other hunters walking around? I guess I'll just sit where lawrence county tells me to sit like a good pet. That's where I'll be when he comes back to get me.

I've been in a lot of different areas at Big Oaks even back when the area was a military base. Any area could produce a mature buck if your just in the right place at the right time. But the deer population is way down from what it used to be. There is still some good hunting there if you get the right area and have patience.
