I want to replace the clips holding the sections on my ladder stands with bolts. I'm going to get the hardware today on my way home from work but I'm not sure what size bolt, how long, or how many. I've got the cheap stands from walmart. I think they are 15' or 16' single person stands. Does anyone know off hand what I need or have a stand close by to check? I also need to know how many bolts I'll need per stand.
Thanks for the help.

I can fit a 5/16 through mine just fine. The wide section of the ladder measures 1 3/16 so 1 3/4 should be plenty long enough.

Oh and my 16ft stands would only need 4. But the top section already attaches to bottom of stand with bolts it came with. Yours may not have?

Do the current clips that come with the package not trust worthy? I'm putting mine up on Saturday

Do the current clips that come with the package not trust worthy? I'm putting mine up on Saturday They are safe. We bring our stands inside after season is over and we store them assembled. We don't need the quick clips. I think bolts would be quieter. And is someone wanted to steal them they would have to carry it out in one piece instead of breaking it down.

Bolts are cheap....I'd buy some 1/4" as well just in case those 5/16" won't fit.

I bought 5/16 bolts. I can always drill the holes out a little bit if I need to. I bought some spray on truck bed liner to coat all the connections. I went to get rubber washers but they were expensive. I found a role of thin black rubber drawer liner for the price of 6 washers. I'm going to cut out 1"x1" squares and punch a hole in the center. I'm trying to eliminate all squeaks from the stands.

Ditto. I'd be surprised if the holes weren't metric......... My bolts were metric. I had a bunch of them as I have a guard rail all around mine. Fellas, I admire you guys for getting in those small cheap stands or the climbing stands. I just could not do it. I'm afraid of heights. The first time I tried to climb my ladder, I got stuck half way up. Legs started shaking and I froze. My daughter cried laughing at me. I wasn't laughing. Now, I don't think much about it, but the bigger and more bolts the better for me. Actually, I'd like to have a little two bedroom tree house, and I might feel safe in it.

So being in one of these www.genielift.com/en/products/boom-lifts/telescopic-booms/s120-s125/index.htmat full extension, with an expanded metal floor wouldn't be your idea of a comfortable day at work? Even if the outriggers were out? To be honest, it took me a day or two to get used to being up in one. Walking side to side in the cage would cause it to sway about 5' side to side.........

I feel safer in a ladder stand than in a loc on or climber. Even after falling from one while I was putting it up a couple of years ago. I was a little shaky in them for the rest of that season. I bought a harness the next year. I like to put the stands in or next to trees with limbs or multiple trunks. The more stuff that's around the stand the safer I feel.

The hardest thing getting used to was the expanded metal floor. If you glanced down, it was as if you weren't standing on anything. It was even more interesting at night. The lights of the city were pretty amazing. This when I was working on the L.A. Coliseum earthquake restoration after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

One time it was so windy we couldn't hardly climb a tower so we hitched a ride to the top of the lift on one of those then finish the climb... Crazyness

While they may not be a HSS, they are actually quite functional. I would not be afraid to use one.

If you are going to use the safety harness that comes with the ladder stand be sure to thoroughly check it out first. I tried using the one that came with one of my stands, the straps going through the buckles were threaded the wrong way. The harness straps just slid out when I put weight on them & the main connection loop started to tear just by setting my (200lb) weight down on it. THEY ARE TOO CHEAPLY MADE! I use a HSS harness now.
