Latest forecast is calling for the rain chances to drop way down after 9 AM Saturday (as of midnight Fri).
It was good to meet Lawrencecountyhunter there and shoot the breeze a while. We both saw squirrels crossing the road as we came in, so there are some in the area. The cuttings I saw were all on oaks. I did check a few shagbark hickories, but found no cuttings at all under them. I didn't get far into the woods, and wasn't far enough from the campground to actually begin to hunt when I heard his truck come in and came back to see if it was another HI brother.
Hope to get back over there later this morning. Still trying to also work in the shoot at Bloomington. Shot there for almost fifty years, enjoy seeing old friends at the big fall shoot every year.

We have thunder right now; looking like it's going to clear around 9:00 as has been stated. We'll probably head out shortly after then. We are going to shoot Bloomington Sat. night Russ - Sunday; might be tough to get over there before noon.

Two inches of rain, wind, and hail here at home overnight. Heavy overcast, right now, and the wind slowly picking up out of the north. Whoever camped out, there, last night, I hope everything is ok.

What a hidden gem of a place!! Fantastic little campground!! Went out for about an hour, saw a few had only a couple good shots, missed both. Will go fishing after lunch a bit and go out again an d try my luck in another locati Here are some revised directions. These are from a hiking website on how to get here. If you take this route, I would advise you bring a truck or an SUV with some clearance. Especially if it just rained (like today!)
Take 70 west to 231 (Cloverdale). Turn south
Drive about 10.5 miles. You'll see 231 veer somewhat a sharp left and a county road that goes straight. Just a few yards to where that V is in the road, there's a sign on the right indicating the town Carp. Take the road going straight. That is county road 600N
Drive short distance on county road 600N. You'll go up a hill and a blue house is on your left and a road just in front of that. That's Cuba Road. Turn right on Cuba Road. br/ Follow Cuba road for (nearly exactly) 3.1 miles. The road slightly curves to the left and you'll see a rickety old 1 lane bridge on your right. The road/bridge is not marked with a street sign. Go over that bridge. Immediately going over that bridge, the road goes straight and one is to the left. Stay straight (there are a second set of directions taking the road to the left, but I didn't take that round). Staying straight, you are on county road 280W also marked as Surber Road at the fence right after crossing the bridge.
Drive 2.9-3 miles. You'll wonder what you got yourself into and if the road will end. Keep driving straight for about 3 miles, the road ends at Rattlesnake campground.
There are 3 steams you cross with this route. After it rains, the first one gets a bit deep. LOL. You'll definitely need to wash your truck when you get home. I don't think a car would cross that just after a rain. It was probably over the heighth of the floor of a car.
All gravel roads once you cross the bridge.
Beautiful campsight!

Never did get too bad overnight. A little rain and some lightning, nothing serious. I did bag 2 squirrels before I had to pull out.
Met Russ last night, and Omegahunter this morning.
Ted- were you driving a tan f-150? I think I saw you stalking off into the woods as I was getting back to my truck.

Ted- were you driving a tan f-150? I think I saw you stalking off into the woods as I was getting back to my truck. We listened to a little coon dog music before going to sleep. We got 3 or 3 1/2 hours of rain starting at 5am. Nice to meet the few that made it before I had to leave! Took 5 male grays out of the population. All from oaks or trees next to an oak. As Russ said, does not appear that the shag hickories produced this year in that area. Hope you guys got some tonight and good luck for tomorrow. If you can't find any squirrels, dbd870 knows where there are a couple chipmunks.

I made it! I had a blast. I just stayed a few hours, but had a great time. I met dbd870 and two young fellas with him, dadfsr and russ. It really was nice to put a face to the people we talk with.
Russ is a delight to meet. I never would have dreamed that he had such a good sense of humor. Before meeting him, I saw him as an EF Hutton type. When he said something, I read it carefully. So, I was expecting to see a John Houseman as Russ. ...Nope, nothing like him. I love stories and he had some good ones! I could talk with this guy all day.
This made me wonder how different I am in person from what people perceive me to be on line.
I told my raccoon story and got so excited my chest tightened up. LOL

First off-I have to say a big thanks to Tedch for reposting directions into the site!!! If he hadn't of done that I don't know if I would have found it!!!! Had some good chats with Dbd (said as soon as I walked up that he knew I was Danf's Dad!) and Omegahunter for awhile after I finally pulled in. Omega had to take off and Dbd was heading out for the Bloominton archery shoot so I hit the woods for a little while-saw some off in the distance but trying to find them when I got there was like looking for a needle in a haystack Got back into camp and found Russ and Jon Snow had dropped in for a visit. I'll have to agree with Jon's take on Russ-he's definitely different than what I had thought but we had a really enjoyable round of fellowship-solved most of the world's problems and started a bunch of new things that had to watched for They left about dark so I fixed some supper and was in the process of cleaning that up when Dbd pulled back in-they never found the archery club We were all about beat so everyone hit the hay. I pulled out this morning as Dbd and his crew of ruffians was heading for the woods. Met Russ coming back in at the bridge so I know he was going to there again for a bit today. I'm glad I was able to at least put a few names to faces and wish I could have been there earlier to meet up with Lawrencecobowhunter-he and I still need to do hog hunting fact checking I'm ready to do this next year and would still gladly host the event on my property-I don't have pond to fish in but there's plenty of squirrels!!!

That's very nice of you to offer to host the event. How far from that camp do you live? I thought it was a nice campsite. I'd sure like to do it again. It was really nice meeting you and the few I got to meet. Yes, Ted's directions were great, but when going down the road after the "bridge", I stopped to get directions from a couple at a wedding party. They had me turn around and go another way. One hour later, I passed the wedding party again. The road sign said "DEAD END", but no mention of a campground at the dead end. I'm slow, but I think this would have helped me.

We went out this morning and JW picked up 1. Had several more but it was so thick trying to get eyeballs on them was very difficult. Even when you saw one by the time you got in position to take the shot you couldn't see them. Saw a doe and found a huge track - very wide. He wasn't any 1.5 year old

I had to work this morning so couldn't stay over night. Saw a few squirrels but not a lot. Missed all of them. So, squirrels are better off when I'm out there. HAHA!
I lost my tackle twice in that pond. I didn't have a bite. I thought I had one, but the line snagged when the bobber was drifting. If there's fish in there, they are more cunning than the squirrels!
Funny thing on my way out.... there was a semi tractor coming up the road just a few hundred yards from the house with the wedding party! I don't know how we passed one another. I was right on the edge of a bit of a ridge and he was very slightly on the side of the hill I think. We had just inches of clearance. Not sure where he was going or where he would have turned around.
That gravel road was the most interesting part of my trip I think! That and the two grey squirrels that ran up on me on the ground when I was sitting on the log. They shocked me as much as they didn't realize I was sitting on that log! I never had a good shot and didn't take any.
Found lots of thorns, spider webs, and glad I know what poison ivy is. There was a huge thick bunch of them on the edge of the clearing just to the side of the pond. I was surprised at how deep they went into the woods. Normally, they will grow up a tree, these were ground dwellers.
Enjoyed the squirrel jerky that (I think his name was Doug, I'm horrible with names and remembering names). He got his limit by about 1pm or so I think it was. He was a great gentleman with a lot of firearms knowledge! I now think I want to also buy a 410 or a 20 gauge!

Funny, I had thought about writing to say "ignore the dead end sign". I had driven right by that bridge, at first thinking, that ol rickety looking bridge? That can't be it. Then I remember reading the second set of directions that took you down the road as soon as you crossed the bridge. That route was the one where you could get there without crossing the streams. About 1/4 mile up the road, something was gnawing at me saying, can't be a coincidence there's that little bridge with that road right on the edge of the creek and one going straight. So, i turned around. What threw me was there were no county road markers, just common names. That house there not too far from the bridge where they had the wedding party looked like a nice property with the big pond there. But, not too far from the camp was a stream close by with a utility shed with lots of wood and a camper. That looked like a great little place to stay if you had the property.

Yes, that bridge was funny; I thought Ted nailed the description of it. I hope that semi tractor didn't cross it. Yes indeed, that was a nice looking pond at the wedding. They had a nice set up for the ceremony too. I was so happy that you posted the instructions. I'm clueless how to work the GPS on my phone and don't have a printer, so it sure helped me. I actually enjoyed the detour and saw some wildlife. Did you get to meet Russ?

Wish I could of made it, but first weekend off in almost two years and I had to take the boss to turkey run. Did see 21 grays while I was there. Then stopped off north of Attica at the potholes. Excellent place. Will get back after them on Tuesday. Hope to make the next one.

Just took this one and also got a shot of the first water crossing to show the wife. First time I used that old Savage since I was probably jdub's age. Figured it would be the easiest to strip down, dry, and oil if it started raining while I was hunting. Forgot my gun oil and used the old trick of using the oil from the truck dipstick to oil it back up. Should have taken a pic of my hammock and tarp set up. First time I got to use 'er out in the wilds. Slept like a baby in it except got woke up when the coon hunters left the premises.
