I went today to check out one of the handicap areas. I didn't go early as I would have gotten lost in the dark; I just wanted to find it. It took me an hour to get there, and I had to take a nap when I got home.
There are no fields near this area, and I'm clueless what a good turkey site looks like. I'll try to go early tomorrow to see if any are talking. I did find a nice spot to park my truck, but that's all I know about it. I'm thinking this area will be better for deer and bipedal monsters.
I slowly drove 3 miles beyond the gate and ran out of gravel. We've had a lot of rain and I didn't want to get stuck. Not very many open areas back there, but I'll give it a try.

What county were you in? No open fields, even small ones? See any water other than rain water?

What county were you in? No open fields, even small ones? See any water other than rain water? I think it's Brown County. Just miles and miles of trees. I can only go where the road leads. I'll know more tomorrow, but I really think I'll see a bipedal monster before a turkey back there.

Sounds like your calling is going to be put to a test. How many days do you have on the reserved hunt and how far can you range from the Tahoe without putting yourself at risk?

Sounds like your calling is going to be put to a test. How many days do you have on the reserved hunt and how far can you range from the Tahoe without putting yourself at risk? I was practicing today, and I think I'm better than last year. As many know, I'm full of hot air. Handicap is the entire season, but I'm working the Christian retreat Thur-Sun. I hope Wed is a good day, but not looking too good. I'll have to recover from the retreat, but I'll get back out as much as I can next week. I don't think I'll have enough energy to go to the other forest tomorrow, but if I don't hear anything tomorrow, I'll check out the other site on Wednesday. There are a lot of turkey in these areas, but thousands of miles of woods.

Go for it but stay within your safe boundaries. Go slow.... Did you notice that I said thousands of miles of trees??? I was watching a movie with my wife and I thought, "Did I say that?" LOL I could be wrong, but I'm thinking this ridge that I'm on ties into the Amazon somewhere. Yes, if nothing else, I'll try to find a spot for when I get back. Thanks Jim!

We'll be rooting for ya Jon! I saw one today! I was so excited; felt like a kid. I got there before sunrise, but didn't see any roosting. About 6:45, I called, but no reply. Went down to another spot and called around 7, but no reply. The were not vocal this morning. I started thinking that I'd go to the other forest, and started driving out. At about the 2 mile point into the forest, I saw one cross the road. He was probably a jake, but I would have shot him in a heartbeat if today had been Wed. He may have been coming to investigate my calls; I don't know. On the way out, I saw an old hiker. He says he walks 4 miles a day and was out looking for mushrooms today. He said that he hasn't heard any lately, but a few weeks ago he heard a lot. I'll go back tomorrow and shoot the first beard I see ...I won't look in the mirror.

Thanks Genesis! Will you be out tomorrow? I've never shot one, so I'll be happy with a jake. I'm thinking there must be more around there is I saw him. It was fun watching that bearded guy walk across the road. He didn't seem afraid of my truck at all.

Jon, ran across an ADA access hunting area today on 700 W up at Missi. Made me think of you. Great parking and a good trail for an ATV. Might be something to think about next year or deer season this year. I know it is a drive for you but might be worth evaluating. Heck, I'd go with you. That place is full of deer. Every place I stopped today had tracks in the mud.

I'd like to have more options than I currently have. I didn't see a single deer track today or yesterday. All I need to do is go to their office and get a key. I'll look them up. Thanks!
