Ok here's what is going on. The brake lights wont work with the trucks lights on or off. Turn signals and parking lights only work with the trucks lights on. However the turn signals blink opposite on the trucks turn signals. I tested the trucks wiring and it tested ok. Tested the trailer ground with out it being hooked to the ball and it showed the trailer had a good ground with the wires connected on the trailer and the truck.

Two things. 1St is turn signals are opposite because from the connection back are switched. The one on the right should be on the left and left on the right side. This requires moving your wire from each side.
2nd sounds like you have a bad connection for only your brake lights. Try cleaning your terminals on your truck and trailer.
Hope this helps

I have a new wire harness on the truck and new wiring and lights on the truck so the terminals are clean. Clarification on turn signals. their hooked up right. what I ment was when the turn signals are lite up on the truck they are off on the trailer and when they are off on the truck they are on on the trailer.

Bulbs are dual. I have tried it with the trailer hooked up and unhooked. with the head lights off on the truck nothing works on the trailer. With the head lights on the parking lights work on the trailer. when I put the brakes on the parking lights go off. When I turn on the turn signals they work but when they blink on the truck they are off on the trailer and when the truck signals blink off they blink on on the trailer. Shouldn't they blink on and off at the same time as the truck signals blink on and off? With the parking lights on the trailer turn signals do blink.

Is the truck a ford/cheby/dodge or an import? Some imports need a special trailer wiring adaptor....... Take a look at this website - it has wiring diagrams for just about any configuration. Their diagrams should allow you to trace the wiring and get it right. I've had some weird things go on with an intermittent ground, but since your problem is the same all the time, I think you need to trace the wiring. www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspxNow if someone could tell me where I can get my hands on a torsion axle for a Triton AUT1282 trailer? For whatever reason the axle broke on the trailer and I had to leave it in Steele, MO last Friday. Since it's wide, I have to rent a 4-place snowmobile trailer, drive back down there, winch the trailer up on it, and drag the whole mess back here. There was maybe 1,500# on the 3,500# trailer. I was told that there's so many variations of Dexter torsion axles that it will have to be a special order. Called Triton and they didn't have any in inventory for the parts dept. - only for the production dept...........

I had a similar issue once. We had to replace the plug, and all we had available was a 4 wire plug and the trailer previously and a 5 wire plug ... or something like that. It worked temporarily until we had a chance to fix it right.

It sounds to me you may have a bad ground.

I have to agree about the ground. Sounds like it is searching for a ground when you say the lights flash opposite to the truck and go out with the brake application. One easy test is to hook up one side of a set of jumper cables from the truck to the trailer on clean metal. Wiggle the clamps around to make sure of good contact, this will eliminate the ground connection issue thru the ball and coupler that so many times gets you. The ground connection to the trailer from the trailer plug is also a common problem. If not this, then check for power with test light at each terminal of truck plug, or better yet a digital volt meter while each circuit is turned on. That way you will know that the trailer is at least getting power correctly and you can work with each circuit individually to check for pinched or corroded wiring.

Agree with a possible ground problem.

Yes it was a bad ground. Ran a wire straight to the lights. They work now. Thanks everyone.

Guaranteed bad ground! With jumper cables, attach one end to a good ground on the truck, then attach the other end to a good clean spot on the trailer and check the results. Alto, go to each tail light, loosen the the mounting nuts and tighten back up while you have the blinkers on. Typically, you will loose ground there also. I deal with this on my equipment trailers at the beginning of every season.
