I have been locked in the house doing spring cleaning as the snow melts so that by the time the ground is clear and dry I can go out and play in the woods. There have been about 100+ geese for the last week or so using the pond and the pasture to loaf. Today while I was out on the porch shaking rugs a group of Sandhills came down from the stratosphere to join the geese it was LOUD and what a site to see.

Took my dog Dexter for a walk, about 11:15 am. Got back home, and about 50-60 cranes flew over. I'm about 35 miles south of JP.

I saw, and heard, a small flock of cranes here in Indy yesterday. And probably more geese flying north than I have ever seen here.

Yup must be spring time! Saw a couple of turkey buzzards sitting in a tree on the west side of the Purdue campus Wed afternoon and then had a couple of flocks of circling sandhills over my house when I got home yesterday afternoon.
Turkey season and morels are just around the corner!!!!!

Had a bunch of them flying over the house on Wednesday. Also, two nights this week I've heard geese flying by in the dead of the night. Never have heard that before.

Wednesday or Thursday last week I saw my first batch of Sandhills flying over the Mooresville/Plainfield area. Several more over the weekend. I heard one batch I could never find yesterday - they must've been high!

I live about 2 miles from the Goosepond FWA and there have at points been 25-30,000 sandhills out there. They are VERY loud and make for a very early wake up call. They are expecting by the time they leave to have upwards of 35,000 sandhill cranes at the Goosepond!

Got to duckhunt there while a big batch of pelicans were sharing our swamp. Was pretty cool sight. Seen some cool birds there in the past 5 yrs.

I have never seen cranes on the ground. Heck, until last year I didn't know what they were flying over. They sure do fly high. If anyone can snap a photo of them on the ground, I'd like to see it.

They fly high and seems like half the time they arent going anywhere when they do fly. They seem to fly in circles alot when i see them !

Some of the state that hunt them call them "ribeye of the sky". yea I've heard a lot of people say that they are one of if not the best bird to harvest for meat! But to do that here would come with a hefty fine and probably a little time in the slammer... I'll just wait till they open a season and could hunt them from the swing on the front porch!
