My youngest son rabbit hunted my place yesterday. He saw 3 but only got 1,then he hunted the other property we have permission on and saw 2 but missed them. He wound up giving me the 1 he got here. I haven't had rabbit in around 5 years........it's going to be some fine eating.....

Mmmm....beagles and one of my 28ga shotguns....nothing better on a winter day. I haven't been able to hunt the past few years due to injuries but used to hunt bunnies every season and would average 2-4 a day on public land. You fellas just need to get out and work the brush a little more often. It's a lot of fun...really.
My best brush-bustin' bunny dog...was my boxer. That meathead didn't care how many thorns were in there....didn't care how tall and thick the briars were...I would just tell him to "get 'em up" and he would literally leap up and into the top of a big thicket and work his way down. Bunnies would come racing out in every direction. That dog loved chasing anything with 4 legs and fur...but he was a great bird flusher as well. He could track pheasant and quail better than my buddy's expensive brittany spaniels.

I gave up rabbit hunting years ago because of health issues.

Back in the 1960's, when there was more Rabbits than Deer; I spent more days hunting Rabbits then hunting other game animal. I grew-up in Farm Country, north of Washington, Indiana, and that area was CRAWLING with Rabbits. It wasn't anything to go out hunting and bringing in five Rabbits. After those bad winters during '77 & '78, the Rabbit population got clobbered, and never recovered. Also Farming practices have drastically changed since the 1960's & early '70's, which reduced the Rabbit population.

Rabbit is hard to beat. When I was young my cousin and his friend had some of the best dogs around and we could hunt probably some of the best ground in the country for rabbits. We used to kill A BUNCH of rabbits. I actually drove through that property a couple of weeks ago spotlighting. Still rabbits everywhere 25 years later.

I see more Rabbits during the late Spring and Summer Months, here in Central Ky. BUT when the Fall season opens, they all disappear.
