JMO but I would be SHOCKED if deer kill's number's arn't down a bunch. Weather this week look's terrible with low's in single digit's for several day's and some rain for upcoming weekend. Orange army is known to be fair weather hunter's so could result in low harvest number's. Time will tell.

Agreed. Saturday I only heard a few shots with the temps in the low teens but on Sunday the low was only in the 30 degree range and I heard lots of shots.

It curtails these old bones from climbing a tree as much as I would if it was blue bird days...

I'd have to agree. I heard more shots than ever Saturday morning but not hardly any yesterday. The gentleman aging deer with the DNR yesterday at Meyer's meat locker in St. Paul, IN said he had 40 deer for the weekend at that point; and had only missed aging a few when times got busy. I've seen the same place with an overflow reefer trailer in the parking lot in years past on opening weekend. Granted, at 2:30 yesterday about 6 more deer were being dropped off.

For the whole season it's impossible to say but last year's opening weekend super wind's and rains with several funnel clouds around made this year's opener look like it was created by Walt Disney, IMO.
Last year was the first time ever I didn't see a single deer either day opening weekend and hunted my can off in spite of the weather.
I didn't go this year but a local guy hunting there saw 5 different bucks and 8 does opening day all under 100 yards. Took out a nice 10 point.
I agree the numbers in THIS county will be down but from those Ive talked to my acquainances opening day was not "normal" with only a few of those saying they eve saw anlters this weekend.
Ive seen exactly four deer driving the same roads Ive drove for decades in a time I normally saw herds of 8-10 as short as 3 years ago. That's four deer since archery season started......not just firearm. All fall and during harvest time.
Rather big county but numbers took a hit last year, most blamed the weather, so Im curious to see how 2014 harvest goes but in the immediate area, it doesn't look good. It would be hard to point a finger at a single factor but we got hit hard by EHD in lots of this county and parts of others around us the past 2 years. Reports of dozens laying dead weren't confirmable by yours truly but they came from sources I have faith in and came from multiple areas and multiple farmers and landowers.
Hoping for a good year for those hunting but I don't expect one and would love to be incorrect on that.
God Bless

I bet with several counties lowered it will reduce it some as well. But I think the weather was fine this weekend and most hunters in this state only hunt about 4 days max anyways .Yes it will be lower IMO but the weather thing is not that big a deal when most hunters are at work anyways through the week .I know about a dozen hunters who were out this am and more than that last evening .
Its all relative and averages out over a two week period . What was wrong with bow season ??It seemed ok to me weather wise .The second week of gun is supposed to be about normal from what I have seen .
I predict 116,000 and thats not because the weather just lower herd numbers .I don't buy into the weather , thing its always something with the weather hot, cold ,wet, wind a perfect two weeks of deer gun season has never happened and likely never will .
JMHO

Thought I read somewhere that a large portion of firearm harvest is from opening weekend?? If this is the case those number's will be down. I can't tell you how many people I have talked to that said they didn't hunt opening day due to cold temp's. Add to that this week's record low's and I am sure a large majortity of hunter's (me included) said forget it. It's possible weather could warm up next week and hunter's may venture back out but again alot of firearm hunter's are fair weather guy's. Be interesting to see the result's.

I know because of the weather I won't be out as much. If it wasn't for the windchills then yeah I would.

That means last year almost 1/3 of all deer harvested in firearm season, which is two weeks long, were killed on opening day.

Thanks for the harvest number's. I thought it was 30 some % opening day. I expect archery to be about the same but would also expect all of this week's number's to be lower due to extreme cold ,snow and wind. This weekend look's somewhat warmer but rain forcasted for Sunday. Again will be interesting to see how it end's up, but I still expect lower firearm overall.

I turned 50 this year and I admit I'm not as tough as I used to be, but with today clothing available, pocket hand warmers, 16000 gram thinsulate boots, heater body suits, etc. for hunters, cold should not be much of a factor, but I was guilty of getting out of the stand a little earlier this morning than normal when the wind picked up.

My experience this season hunting on private land surrounded by the same:
Saturday--fewer shots than normal. Saw only two deer all day.
Sunday--more shots than Saturday. Hunted the morning and saw just one deer. Got discouraged and went home to get warm.
Monday--only a couple shots all day. Morning was too cold and didn't think the deer were moving so I stayed in the sleeping bag as long as possible. Finally went hunting at 1 pm and saw several deer including three bucks. Shot one of them.
I was surprised more hunters didn't take advantage of the snowy woods on Monday. Maybe they had to work. Jobs can get in the way of hunting!

Since no one has said it, I can't help myself. I bet we have a record harvest. :-)

Lafayette Area
I heard several shots early Saturday, a few way to early. The shots went quiet about 10 minutes after legal time and started back up around 8:00. Total shots for the day were more than in recent years. Sundays shots were about normal for the area. I checked in a doe the old fashion way on Sunday at Arrows III. They said the hunter/deer traffic was heavier than normal on Saturday.

I know I have invested some money in better hunting clothing over the last couple years and it paid off this weekend for sure. I was actually surprised at how comfortable I stayed this past weekend.
