So everyone I've talked to and from what I've read is been pretty slow all over as far as shots. Any guesses why. Low deer numbers? Too cold keeping guys in? I think I heard a total of 5 shots by the time I finally got mine out at 2:30. Hearing a lot of guys saying even on public land it was awful quiet.

Extreme cold temps is probably the number one reason. It probably slowed deer movement...AND, it makes it real hard for the average hunter to sit still and concentrate.

I was hunting in Carroll cty for the first time ever in an area that wasn't heavily wooded. I heard like 3 others shots besides my sons and that was it. Heard more from the waterfowl hunters in the area.

Slowest opening morning for me in a long time. I managed to last in the cold till 11:45 am. Didn't see a deer till almost 10. Seen 3 does, thats it. Very few shots. I was in Miami county. My buddy did get a nice one in cass, would have been a perfect 12 with split brows but he had busted off the last half of his rack on one side.

We made it even slower for some possible trespassers at the property. Not sure if they have neighbor permission, owners live 2 hrs away, no contact info. They put a blind right across the driveway on the tip of the neighbors 15 acres that intersects with all 3 properties (think like a cul-de-sac)with no hunter orange from our pear trees and had the windows open facing our property and a shooting window open facing another neighbors house. No shots could be taken except on our field, it was obvious. CO wouldn't come out since we don't own that little part and they said have to see the violation in order to go in and write a ticket.
So in the interest of safety for the neighbors house we parked our car in the driveway right in front of their blind and planned shooting window about 10yrds away and dug up sassafrass roots until dark. We could see them peeking out of the blind at us but they never would come out or say anything. They acted extremely nervous which did nothing to assure us that they had permission to be there.
They did not remove the blind afterwards so we will be visiting again tomorrow for some more fun. My mind is still grabbing for answers as to what their logic was when they picked that spot...if they had set up 100 yards in the woods they would have been almost guaranteed a deer.

I would say one ( or all) of the following reasons: 1. More & More posted "No Hunting" land. 2. Weather conditions not suitable & abundant Acorn yields keeping Deer movement to a minimum. 3. Ever increasing cost of Hunting (Equipment & Leasing). 4. Less Hunters participating (older Hunters) 5. Less "younger" Hunters, as they would rather play a "Deer Hunting" game on-line. 6. Poaching & lack of proper habitat due to developments 7. Deer movement more at night.

I think the number of deer may be way down. It may be just my neck of the woods but we started seeing it last year n even moreso this year. Dont know if its ehd, just this propert, or the massive doe limits. But last year we saw way more bucks n way fewer does. Our trail cams this year are probably 80% bucks from june thru now. In 15 sits ive probably seen 20 does n 50 bucks. Some hunts 2-5 bucks n not a single doe. In the past seeing 10 was not unordinary in a sit. Is the liberal doe policy and the one buck policy really gotten things out of wack? More than the dnr knows??

If you find your Deer population declining then I'd pass on shooting any Doe and you might bring this to the attention of the IDNR. As equipment, for harvesting Deer gets better & better, like archery equipment, rifle scopes, and other "tricks-of-the-trade"; this all has a bearing on the Deer population especially in a liberal Doe harvesting County. Also a 15 day modern gun season might be a little too long, Statewide & in some Counties. Here in Ky we have Zones 1-4 with Zones 1 & 2 allow 16 days for modern gun. In Zones 3 & 4 we are only allowed 10 days for modern gun season; and in these Counties you can take one Buck & Antlerless OR two Antlerless, during modern gun season; BUT only with Archery Equipment (Bonus Deer Harvest). As for Bonus Deer in Zone 1 it is unlimited Doe harvest, and in Zone 2 you can take two additional "Antlerless" with a firearm or any equipment.

Is the liberal doe policy and the one buck policy really gotten things out of wack? More than the dnr knows?? I see the same thing and the herd once you figure in Buttons and bucks of all ages is out of wac quite a bit .But You cant fight city hall and all the other hunters as well. I get tired of the acorn and weather excuses used for declining shots and harvest its either windy / cold /rainy or hot every year those just do not fly anymore with me or any sensible hunter who uses their head to do more than wear a orange hat !!LOL Sure to some degree progress but that argument flies out the window when you realize that its happening in areas of the state that have had little or no change at all over the last 30 -40 years . You cant use the hunter number thing its has risen / tag sales the last two years now .So that flies as well . Its over all herd reduction and it may very well be time to open up the second buck again very soon they eat crops and cause as many or more car deer accidents as any doe does . Lets face it IN is not KY or IL and they are starkly different states and deer herds than here .Also a 15 day gun season is just about right and actually one of the shortest in the Midwest/country for deer . When you look at the seasons on paper even with the ML season factored in most hunters only hunt 2 -4 days of that two weeks .IL has the shortest gun seasons over all .The late gun season is an issue that the DNR does not know its full effect as of yet and might likely slowly dissapear as the herd lowers county by county . Change will come just as the slow lowering of doe limits happen just wait for it it will happen when the powerful who play politics with the DNR start having real low deer numbers and lots of turdy little bucks and jacked up older ones every where on their hunting land with few baby makes ..We will just wait and see.

Well over 100 shots heard here this morning. Wife and I have seen 13 deer between us...11 were does. Things in this little corner of the state are pretty standard.

Yes I live in Jay county which mainly crops and small tracts of woods and it was really slow here yesterday and today not sure what the problem is but I have had the same problem this year as the other hunter very few does and yearlings being seen mainly bucks I guess I would like to see the number of doe tags given out at least in this county cut way back. Good luck to everyone

In Jennings county we didn't hear many shots yesterday. I'm thinking may have something to do with the really cold temps. and the deer still moving at night.

Had a hunter from Indy that hunts the woods down the road. Same owner of the woods I hunt. And he a a small 6 before gun season and was hoping for a doe but hasn't seen one all week I've seen does around but it has been a couple weeks since I have.

Shot and missed clean on a nice eight point chasing after a doe that was headed strait at me, got yelled at shortly after that by a guy from kokomo. He proceeded to tell me I messed him up and that the buck was heading to him, which I find kinda hard when the doe was heading north east in my direction and the buck was hot on her tail. But the highlight of the day was the leasers across the road shooting deer from the back of a pickup truck, CO came down and said he looks to bust them if he can. He went on to say just because they are judges, cops, and lawyers from Ft. Wayne doesn't mean they are above the law. I just hope I can get something this week.

I only heard 163 shots between 7-11. Which is way down from the past. It is usually 300-350. Jefferson/Switzerland Co.

I heard fewer shots over the weekend than I remember ever hearing and only saw a few deer during 3 good sits.
All of that happening after one of the best archery seasons I've had in 5+ years as far as deer sightings. They just weren't moving.
