Today I was pressed for time so instead of going to my normal spot I went right behind my house. At 730 I rattled, I was looking around and when I looked up there was a huge buck standing in front of me in my freshly cut cornfield. I grunted at him several times and he finally decided to come in, and he came right in. I ended up shooting him at 12 yards. I guess the angle was too steep so I only hit one lung and the arrow came out through his stomach. I didn't know this while I was waiting in my stand but I'm glad I wasn't in a hurry to get down. About 20 minutes after I shot him I watched him cross the field again and head into a clear cut. His mouth was open and he was panting so I knew he would probably bed over there and die. After that I got down and when I saw green slime on the arrow I knew I needed to wait. I called a guy with a dog and we went back out around 3. We got turned around a few times but finally found him about 100 yards in there. He is a 10 pointer with several kickers and he weighed 200 lbs field dressed.

Congratulations! Was the dog a seasoned tracker? Yes, it belongs to a local taxidermist and he usually helps several people a year find deer.

Great deer, congrats!
I had a little bit of deja-vu over this one. A year ago this weekend I'd put 14 coyotes in the truck and one hung up at 300+ yards in a pasture so I thumped him. Couldn't find him in the grass, asked if his dog would find it and ironically he'd just finished trailing a 140" buck on that SAME PROPERTY.
Flash forward to this weekend, I had 10 coyotes down and one hung up in that same pasture and I thumped him at 355. Same deal, looked dead in the scope but wading around in the grass yielded nothing. Ironically, the dog had just finished trailing your buck... on another property this time. He's saved a lot of deer hunters heartache with that dog but honestly it's not a huge heart breaker to let the buzzards find my coyotes so I've yet to use it. I just go back and get them out of the field so the landowners don't complain.
