At what age did you start sitting alone or when did you start letting your kids sit alone? I learned how to hunt on my own when I was 16. DITTO!

16 when I could drive. Dad did not deer hunt back then. Since we lived in town I had to rely on Dad and my older brothers to take me until I could drive. I would be on my own before 16 squirrel hunting with my brothers. I let my son sit by himself when he was 14. My biggest fear with him was he would fall asleep in the stand.

I was 12 years old when I started to bow hunt with a recurve for rabbits.

I started hunting when I was 12 years old. My dad dropped me off at my stand on opening morning and went to his about 200 yrds away. I think it depends on the maturity of the child and how much you have taught your child. Once they understand hunters safety and gun safety, then they are ready to hunt with you or on their own.

Can't remember the exact age 14 maybe, but I know it was younger than 16 as I would borrow my brother's truck and drive back over the hill to hunt squirrels. I remember thinking I was cool stuff driving a truck with my 10/22 in the passenger seat.

My dad was not a deer hunter, so I had to start on my own. I got an H&R shotgun for Christmas when I was 13, and started hunting with it on my own the next fall. I didn't shoot a deer until I was 15.

I appreciate everyone's response. My son is 12. I think the bottom line is when will I feel comfortable letting him sit alone and when will he feel ready.

I wasn't raised around any hunters, but I did borrow a buddy's .22LR or shotgun to pursue rabbits, squirrels, and frogs around his family's farm when I was around 16 or so. I didn't start deer hunting until I was 27 years old...

I didn't start deer hunting until I was 27 years old... I started Deer Hunting back in 1972. Actually, I saw my very first Hoosier Whitetail Deer in 1969, while I was Squirrel Hunting in September. It was near a creek and I spooked him or her when I entered the woods, seeing only it's raised white tail.

I was 15 in 1986 and every noise I heard heading out the my stand scared the crap out of me. I would shine my light in the direction of the noise. I agree with others, depends on the kid.

I dont remember for sure. it was either 12 or 14 (whatever the minimum age for big game archery was in NYS in the early 90s). But i had gone out many many times before that with my dad and had been through a couple hunter safety/training courses.
