I have been coming to southern Indiana for about 16 years straight. Always the 1st week of gun season. Love it. My landowner friend I met at church while visiting my brother those many years ago. I sometimes make a return trip with the ML but not usually. My friends from Indiana come to WNC and fish in the spring for big spotted bass. I am trying to decide whether to switch up this year and go the last week of bow season with my Barnett Quad 400 crossbow and then also hunt opening weekend of gun season with my pistol or shotgun or whether I should just hunt the 1st week of gun season as usual. What say you all? I guess I want opinions on what to expect in terms of quantity of deer sightings and also quality potential. I usually always fill my three tags and sometimes an extra doe tag also. My landowner doesn't bow hunt. I guess I'm wanting to know what would be optimal. Thanks a lot and happy hunting.

You can't beat the week before firearms season, so I'd highly recommend that you be here for it.

Bowhunting is usually best the last of Oct first on Nov. Sometimes the "second" rut occurs during muzzy season and its hot.

Personally, I would buy the tag bundle and hunt the last week of early archery and then the firearm opener weekend. THEN, if you don't fill out you can always come back for the MZ season..

Yeah, if I were only going to hunt 1 week, it would have to be the first week of gun season.

Gun season comes in just about the middle of our possible dates....earliest is the 12 latest is the 18 and this year its the 15.
I would do like woody said and hunt the last week of archery and then opening weekend of gun.

Agree but specific about which seven days that "week" is.
7 days starting the Monday before firearm but INCLUDING firearm weekend, even if bow hunting alone.
WAY too much being moved about to miss the firearm opener IMO so I wouldn't END the week before such but include it in the "week".
Even if I only had 3 days, it would still include opening day of firearm for the last of the three but.. The week of Nov 8 (give or take, with middle beginning or end of the week your choice) year in and year out, (since firearm opener DOES move) would get a real, REAL close second place.
If not for the hunter push happening opening day of firearm, that Nov 8 week would be No 1, for me. I'd not feel I was much handicapped only having that week, ever.
When firearm opens the 15th or earlier (earlier preferred here), we have them all in one.
God Bless

Thanks for the replies. Looks like drive up on Saturday the 8th and hang my stand that evening. Hunt that entire week with the Xbow and then gun hunt opening weekend the 15th and 16th. That will give me a solid week of hunting. I do buy the bundle license. Appreciate it.
