I just paid my latest water bill. My combined water and sewer has gone up 138% OK, 27.6% per year over 5 years. 2009 was $28.83 and 5 yrs later it is $68.52. And yes, this was the same usage, 400 cu ft for the month which, when multiplied times 7.48 (the gal per cu.ft.) equals 2, 992 gallons for the month. That's less than 100 gal per day for my household. I can't get much less than that. I know we need improvements here but...REALLY?! And another increase is coming! Never in my wildest imagination did I ever think I'd be paying over $1,000 per year for this service but that's what it will be with the next increase. I'm taken back to my old relatives that collected rain water in barrels for non potable use! That just might be me, soon. And this is just one more of the issues we as US "citizens" face daily! The older I get...the more I see a revolution on the horizon!!!

We've been paying $55 or so (the minimum) since we moved into our house 2 years ago. Without sewer.
A new company took it over and it's now in the $35 range.

That stinks for sure. I know it's not for everyone but this is one of the reasons I live in the country. I live pretty "sparingly" out of necessity and live alone but running the AC, electric stove and water heater, I have a frig and an additional upright freezer out in the HOT garage, I'm home almost all day every day, computer is on probably 16-18 hours a day (and is my TV), I run a fan all night ever night 365 days a year and any day it's over 80 too, circulating the air from the AC which runs any time it's over 74 degrees out (it's always warmer in here than outside without the air on). Water, of course, comes from the well with the electric well pump, an old 2" above ground pump. Electric bill covers em all and it's been under 80 dollars for everything three months running now. A 65 dollar water bill would kill MY budget LOL. I see my son's utility bills once in awhile and about faint but there are 7 people in that house so...ugh. I've been weaning things down month by month and have a few additional things to work on before winter heat bills kick in too. The entire "cost of living" thing seems to be out of hand and getting worse. Toughest for me is the grocery bill and gasoline but I've learned to cut back there too. Things like power for lights and heat and water are staples but everyone I know who is retired has really put some efforts into reducing the usage for any of them. 138 percent increase in 5 years is unjustifiable to me. I cannot come up with what possibly could cause such an increase so I feel your anger. God Bless Steve

I work in the water/waste water field. The EPA keeps putting stricter regulations on us each year. Aging infrastructure needs replaced. All of this costs money and a lot of it. Any company that sells supplies or equipment to utilities charges insane prices. I went two years without a raise due to the economy and the tightened budget. Now, after saying all that, I agree that the upper executives are often overpaid. If you really want to look into things try doing an open records request regarding upper management pay scales.

I dont talk about it here much scrub-buster, but I've spent 32 years of my career in the water world from engineering and design to presenting papers at natonal symposiums. I appreciate what you suggest. Unfortunately for me, I know too many of the details of the inner workings of this debacle. Thats probably why it angers me so much. I've been deeper into the belly of this beast than I care to admit in the last 20 years. I'll simply submit at this point...I'm gathering a lot of facts...

I completely understand what you are getting at. From what I've seen, any time politicians are involved in running something its never a good thing. Good luck

Continued increase of federal & state regulations on generation & flu-gases, more gas powered primary & peak-plants, closing of coal mines, & closing of coal-fired power-plants is going to drive electric bills thru the ceiling while putting more folks out of work.

Place most of the blame (along with CEO greed) on our worthless/weak Dollar. Everything you look at today is almost 100% more expensive then just 10 years ago. Our dollar has less & less purchasing power, and those executives want more & more pay for work they don't perform.
