Have I missed a change, or did I just not know that even with the recent changes in handgun rules that handguns were not legal equipment for the Youth Weekend? I was looking through the Hunting and Trapping guide and the chart on page 27 doesn't have them marked a legal.

I think the no handgun rule has been in effect since day one of the youth hunts.
As I understand it..
One has to be 18 to be issued a carry permit in Indiana. It is unlawful to sell or transfer a handgun to anyone under the age iof 18 unless it is the parent doing the transferring.
Pretty sure that is Indiana law..

No permit required to hunt with handgun....believe that changed last year! You can handgun hunt with a youth license just not on youth Deer WEEKEND....that's the way I read the rules from DNR.

From the ATF web site ... if this is taken word for word the kid would actually need written permission from their parent/guardian in order to possess the handgun to hunt with it.
Q: May a parent or guardian purchase firearms or ammunition as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18 years of age)?
Yes. However, possession of handguns by juveniles (less than 18 years of age) is generally unlawful. Juveniles generally may only receive and possess handguns with the written permission of a parent or guardian for limited purposes, e.g., employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting.

Actually, if the ATF post is taken word for word, it really doesn't say anything without going in more detail and explaining when "generally" applies.
