Well - could have done without this. Been having a little knee pain, but Thursday evening something gave out and put me down. The wife finally drove me to the emergency room at midnight in teeth-grittin, tears running pain. The x-rays didn't show any broken bones but the ER doc said it is pretty clear that I have a significant tear of some sort, ligament, cartilage or both maybe. It is funny that I recall nothing that would have caused it at all. Just sort of snuck up and knocked me down, literally. Wife had to help me get in and out of the car. Anyway, they sent me home about 4:00 AM with a leg brace from my ankle to the hip (called an immobilizer, darn good description too) a keister full of needle holes, a scrip for some powerful pain killers, some steroid pills, crutches and and instructions to ice regularly and see my regular doc Monday.
I tell you what, I am no stranger to pain, but when you hear that knee injuries are painful beyond belief, believe it.
So, here I sit watching TV and sipping coffee, waiting for medicine time again. I hate being immobilized, it drives me crazy, I like to stay busy. Today I will shine some shoes and boots, maybe clean up my tackle box, check over and polish up some pistols, whatever I can get the wifey to bring to me to fiddle with.
oh well enough whining

My wife had 3 arthroscopic surgeries on her knees and then ended up with both of them being replaced. She would agree with you on the pain part. Just guessing but I suspect your doc will refer you on to a specialist. Hang in there.

you are right on the specialist - I will hit my family doc first because he can pull strings and get me in quicker.
Thanks!

My wife just had total knee replacement of left knee May 12th and total right July 7th. I see surgeon on Aug. 7th. You are right about knee pain being really bad. For me it is a really sharp pain. I had four disk removed and spacers put in and four vertebrae worked on with a plate installed in my neck screwed to five vertebrae. The pain from that is bad but it feels more like someone hit me with a ball bat. Anyway I hope you get to feeling better soon. Will pray for you.

Best of luck friend... pain sucks. Since you are immobilized, check out my campfire thread "Adventures with My Son."

I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee 1/27 to remove a term piece of meniscus, remove arthritis, and ended up repairing a groove in the my femur. My knee pain was bad enough that I wouldn't even wish it on my ex wife. :-)
Take it easy and do everything the doctors say to do. I unfortunately did not follow all of the rehab exercises. Therefore at 6 months out I'm still not back to normal.

Well, I sharpened my best knife, swatted some flies, cleaned out my tackle box, watched tv, ate, watched some tv, Then I sat the patio, and watched my dog sitting on the patio, who was watching my wife sit on the patio, who was watching a lizard sit on the steps, who was watching a bug. I don't know what the bug was looking at.
Now for a nap before The Last Ship comes on.
Heck I might take a liking to this doing nuthin' - git me some Obommycare and a welfare check!

Update - well I have pretty good tear in a meniscus, the MRI did not pick it up very well, but they have seen this before and are sure of it. Tomorrow I go in and they will suck all the excess fluid off the knee, look for blood or infection, and the shoot it back full of some kind of cortisone I think.
The doc says that one of your meniscii has it's own blood vessels, and the other does not. The one with a blood source can possibly heal without surgery, the other one can't. So if there is blood in the fluid they remove that could actually be a good thing. If this doesn't do it then arthroscopic is next. Sometimes they just have to go in and look I guess.
Meanwhile, I am working, just don't leave my office much.
Thanks all for the prayers

Ok so 3/4 of the cartilage is gone from under my kneecap, which is letting the kneecap clank directly on the femur. That accounts for the noise that sounds like my rattlin' antlers, plus swelling, pain and fluid buildup.
They still think that there is a meniscus tear which accounts for the REAL pain even though it is not obvious on the MRI. So, they sucked it out and shot it back full of cortisone. That should get the swelling and pain down some, and then Monday I talk to them about scoping.
Feels much better after the injection, maybe I can sleep some.
