Has anyone seen the harvest report from this past 2014 season. I feel like the numbers of turkey were down in my part of the State. I talked with Steve Backs a month or so ago and he indicated the data should be released in a month. Just wondering if anyone has heard or seen anything official from the DNR.

From Steve Back We thought we had the final numbers and then a log book that was sent separately from the UPS pick up arrived in the mail the other day after being "lost" (delivered to the wrong address). It was a significant number of turkeys so I'm now redoing the analysis. It looks like the final tally will be over 10,800 but less than 11,000. Steven E. The latest...from Steve... Just finished them up yesterday and sent them up to my superiors so I probably can’t release as yet. Soon as I can I’ll send you information. I had to redo the entire analysis after a significant number of log sheets from a large check station were lost in the mail. Steven E. The harvest numbers are pretty much of no importance as long as Indiana is not going to make any changes to the season/regs.

Abstract: Hunters harvested 10,872 wild turkeys in 88 of the 92 counties. The 2014 harvest was 4% less than the 2013 harvest of 11,374. The majority of the birds was harvested in the early part of the season and the early morning hours. A total of 1,185 birds (11% of total harvest) was taken during the youth-only weekend prior to the regular season. The proportion of juvenile turkeys in the harvest was 17% with 53% 2-yr-olds, and 30% ≥ 3 yr-olds. The northern region, the largest region, supported 25% of the harvest, with 46% of the harvest occurring in the south-central and southeast regions. The estimated number of hunters afield was 59,237 in 2014, with an estimated hunter success of 18%, the lowest success rate since 1986.

That 11% early youth weekend total tells me what I already knew...our turkey season comes in a little too late.

Agreed, I heard birds in all of our usual spots 2 weeks before season. Then not hardly a gobble once season was in...

Go figure..I had birds gobbling all season long....although, I felt like season was early this year, but pretty normal for me. I was lucky enough to take a nice bird myself and called in two birds for son-in-law and a friend that they both harvested. Guess it depends a lot on the specific properties one hunts.

What I have said for years. We use to have a earlier season. Then they started moving it back. According to the data in the report, it looks like they have used the same formula for the start date since 1972.

I was thinking it was always the first Wednesday after the first full week of April. This was about 20 years ago. Making the season a week to a week and a half earlier. I could be wrong. To many heavy loaded turkey and waterfowl rounds since then. Lol
