A different view than many have including other authors about the deer herd crisis many are having now . bowhunting.net/2014/04/whats-happening-to-our-whitetails/On a side note MR has drank the Koolaid and is obviously part of or wants to be part of the group I spoke about in another thread .Obviously more about bucks and trophy buck killing and management than the deer herd its self .True colors shine through every time don't they . I do agree it lays completely at the fault of the DNR not being more responsive and getting their head out their collective butts .

Just a quick question for you: Is this M.R. James a Wildlife Biologist or just an outdoor writer??

M.R. James was the editor for Bowhunting Magazine, back in the 80's.

Then I question his observation on the "plight" of the Deer, in several States he mentions. Just because 2013 was an "off year" means little concerning the health of the Deer herd. Also "Blue Tongue" & EHD aren't exactly the same disease.

Habitat Habitat Habitat, that is the key in our area. In southern Laporte county along the Kankakee River we have had huge numbers of fence rows taken out for pivot irrigation systems. The neighbor and I have a combined 270 ac. patch of WRP with the Turkey foot game preserve about 1 mile away. We see deer all season long "except when the river floods then they move to high ground" we see lots of does and several nice bucks each season. We are mostly meat hunters so not seeing monster bucks doesn't bother us that much. I am not a wildlife expert but it seems if you keep taking away their homes eventually there numbers will drop. Maybe that's one of our bigger problems in this area?

The group he lauds so much in Illinois does not have the whole picture for the Illinois deer herd. They are using the down percent to further their own agendas. As far as Indiana goes we have to understand that this drop is from an ALL TIME HIGH and the DNR planned for a drop. EHD was the fly in their ointment plans, but I'll bet that will all be considered this coming season on Bonus Permits. The DNR also backed off numerous counties last year on the Bonus Permits. They were and I'll bet still are, easing off the gas pedal. But internet arm chair deer biologists, such as M.R. and the Illinois group knows better than the DNR, right?

One or two year's of no EHD and I expect the deer herd to rebound quick. My area we are actually seeing a increase in antlerless deer last couple season's. We found a few EHD victim's locally but not to many.
