Gov. Mike Pence’s decision today to declare an energy emergency in response to the propane shortage authorizes the Indiana Attorney General’s Office to use certain investigative and enforcement powers. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said an energy emergency allows his office to investigate consumer claims of price gouging and if violations are found, seek injunctive relief, consumer restitution and civil penalties. “In the majority of instances, propane prices are being driven by substantial market forces. However, this emergency authority allows my office to thoroughly investigate price gouging complaints to determine if any violations exist,” Zoeller said. “If there is any evidence of consumers being taken advantage of during these already difficult times, my office will take action. Hoosiers should also know that we will continue to closely monitor the price of propane sold at all levels of the market.” Under Indiana law (IC 4-6-9.1), price gouging occurs when a consumer is charged an “unconscionable amount” for the sale of fuel. For example, if the amount charged grossly exceeds the average price of fuel during the seven days before the emergency was declared or if the amount is not attributable to cost factors to the retailer. Since Dec. 16, the Attorney General’s office has received 23 consumer complaints related to the propane shortage and 21 of those are concerning the high prices. Hoosiers who want to report suspected price gouging can do so by calling the Attorney General’s Office hotline toll-free at 1-866-241-9753 or visiting www.IndianaConsumer.com.

I'd buy some electric space heaters before I paid that. 3 Infrareds keep my house (1600 ft2) pretty warm without the furnace. Landlord so unhappy with me for doing so but I plugged the furnace outlets and covered them with more carpet (not attached). This ol place cost 300 a month to heat (and more!) during NORMAL winters. Not on SS. I shut everything down but the bathroom, kitchen and livingroom and bought the quartz electric heaters. One for each room. A stiff breeze outside will put a candle out on the table here LOL. (semi-kidding). Last electric bill was 186 and I am ALL electric now, home 24/7, heat bulb on the well in the garage, 3 heat tapes, heat bulb on where water comes into mobile home. Nights like last night and the drain to the tub still freezes shut and I have to bucket water to the stool to flush it. All I need is to be living in some remote 1000 acre patch and I could call this "roughing it". One more month of this.....sigh. First month of something left and I'm eating two porterhouse steaks every day for a week. The whole LP thing went nuts here. One of the FEW things I've done "smart" was to shut off that furnace before this winter. I was TOLD (last month) that it's over 5 bucks a gallon, 150 gallon max here. Nope. That equals NOT SOMETHING POSSIBLE which the land lord is not "getting". CANNOT means UN able to. yish. Anyone know of a cabin in KY with a wood burner I could rent for me and my ol coon dog? Some changes coming this year in a bit more income thankfully but overhead has to go down......soon. God Bless

This whole Propane shortage, as with other resources, is due to the fact that there are too many people demanding it. Face it, the Human population (Worldwide) is becoming too high and we're out-stripping available supplies of these resources. As the population grows, resources will become harder to find, and more expensive.

That will be our demise ... to damn many of us. Period.
Nature might decide to re-balance herself by killing us with disease or we might kill ourselves by nuking our neighbors to take their resources.

A number of years ago, it was estimated that only 4% of American homes were properly insulated. Back when I worked in the HVAC trades, I insulated an older brick home out in the country that had two 500 gallon LP tanks out back. He would make sure these were full [cheaper in hot weather] before the leafs were falling. We first blew 10 inches of cellulose insulation in the attic, which was over what used to be 6 inches of fiberglass, which had settled down to about 3 inches. We then started on the the side walls by using a hammer drill for an entrance hole. That takes a lot of experience to do that right. At the end of the heating season that year, he had hardly dipped into the 2nd tank. Saw him later and he said what he paid for the insulating job by not buying more LP. Did dozens of older wood sided homes, no insulation in the walls, just a fire block, none in attic. Forgot how many attics I did that were built with 4" batt laid in, and was now at less than 2". Nice and warm in attic when we started, very cold when we finished. Heat loss is 70% attic, 20% side walls, and 10% crawl space. Jeez folks, check your home [and business]!

As I've learned in my Biology Classes, in College (my major), When species of animals become over populated and then diminish resources necessary to their survival; "Mother Nature" takes over and re-balances things back to normal. Sometimes at the expense, of extinction, of a certain species. Mankind is no exception, but we're most likely to do away with ourselves, through wars.

As the population grows, resources will become harder to find, and more expensive. Since we're a net exporter of LPG that doesn't wash. If there wasn't enough to supply domestic demand there wouldn't be any to export. This is nothing more than the same old shell game they play with heating oil in the northeast every winter, an "engineered shortage whose only purpose is increased profit on the backs of helpless consumers.
