It will be 28 years tomorrow. A Gutwrenching scene, for sure. I was at lunch with my buddy, Big Dave. We both worked at New Energy, the ethanol plant in South Bend at the time. We were watching the news while chowing down on Hungarian goulash and cabbage rolls at Simeri's. I'll never forget. There was a collective gasp and then the whole bar went silent. Total disbelief at what we saw. President Reagan's speech: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa7icmqgsow

Freshman year at Anderson University. Had just come into the dorm from basketball practice. Saw everyone gathered around a tv in the lobby. Stopped and watched.

Actually saw it unfold while stationed at Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL while in the Navy. That oxygen cloud hung in the sky all day as a sad reminder.

6th grade, we had just come back to class from lunch and the teacher announced it. We went to the library to watch the news coverage. If I remember correctly, this was the event that put CNN as the leader in world news coverage.

Was in 6th grade, they brought a tv into the classroom to watch. Truly an unforgettable moment. Highcottonguide, on a side note, I grew up a few miles from the ethanol plant and remember the smell when the wind was right (St Rd2 and the bypass). It is now shut down but supposed to be reopening soon. And Simeri's is still a good place to eat/drink. The owner (Mr Simeri) just recently died by the way. It's still open at same place (Indiana and Walnut). Always fun to read things that bring back memories. Thanks.

I was 6 years old (couple days away from turning 7) and I barely remember seeing this on tv. I remember being in the living room at home when I seen this.

I was a Junior in high school and was taking trade and industry class at a public high school. I stopped by my house for lunch, on the way back to my high school. I was eating scrambled eggs for lunch when I saw it on tv. When I got to school, it was during my lunch period and I went to the cafeteria and was telling people what had happen. Nobody would believe me. Then they came on the intercom and announced the tragic news. I had never heard the cafeteria so quiet. Will never forget that day.

Yup, 2nd grade and like a few others my teacher wheeled in the tv and we watched it.

Being that my Grandma was Hungarian, I love this place as it made me feel at home the second I caught the cookin' smaell!

And later on, we found out what caused the "major malfunction", and no one went to jail.

I have been to Simeri's a few times myself, mostly to party but I have eaten there also. I agree it is a nice place. Highcottenguide, you probably turned some of my corn into ethanol.

I worked at Bendix in South Bend at the time. Smelled the ethanol plant a lot. Never ate at Simeri's though. But have eaten pizza at Bruno's.

Maybe the best pizza around, at least in top 3 for sure. My Mom used to sell Amway products to Rosa Cataldo (Bruno's wife) for several years a long time ago and we ate their pizza a time or two! Jay

Jay Ahh yes! Many times, I'd get a calzone for lunch. Eat half of it for lunch and the rest for dinner! I can "smell" it now!

I was on the school bus when an older girl told us. I even remember which girl. It was a shock.
