Can't help but think that this is not what Indiana's deer herd needed. With already stressed deer number's this extreme cold and above average snowfall will no doubt take out some more deer. We are supplemental feeding best we can but these extreme cold temp's can't be good.

We are supplemental feeding best we can but these extreme cold temp's can't be good. It hasn't been all that bad down here in the south. I can see where deep snow and sub-zero temps could have a very negative impact on deer. You probably know thus but I'll post for the others. Feeding deer just pure corn is not helping them. They need a higher protein that corn can produce.

That would explain why Canada has so few whitetail.

Put a Midwest whitetail in the middle of a Canadian winter and it likely wouldn't last long.
How much, on average, do far north whitetail weigh compared to far south deer? 100 lbs?
Better suited to the temps and conditions.

We've received 4" of snow this morning, but it isn't all that cold, with a temp. of 36 degrees at 2:10 pm EST. Just saw five Deer running and playing in my back field. They seemed to be in excellent health & fat.

The best way to help wintering wildlife, is to improve winter habitat.

We keep corn on our deer's diet approx 8 months out of the year. I'd guess they start eating on the field corn by late august early sept and I have been leaving 2-3 acres's standing corn and once we quit hunting, usually by Dec 1st we put out the timed feeder/spreader. (Put out 200-250lbs month) So deer on farm have corn available to them from August through beginning of April in addition to the other food plot's. They sure seem to have alot of fat on them.
