so... you've gottten 18 deer in 6 years.... i dont think you should be complaining I'm not complaining I'm just saying warrick county doesn't have that many deer as it used to and when I hunt here at home in warrick County I just don't have good odds but my odds in vermillion are way better as you can see I have had a lot of success there.

Fellow deer hunters, my "proposal" was written "tongue in cheek" to illustrate what managing a white tail deer herd for purely trophy hunting would be like. I am a retired, fixed income deer hunter. My resources do not allow me to own or lease hunting property. I live and hunt in one of the bottom 10 counties in total deer kill in the state. I am 99% sure I have never seen an 8 and 1/2 year old deer in my life. I don't have the time nor money to deer hunt in another state. I have seen 1 deer this entire season and promptly shot it. In 46 years of hunting I have 1 deer of a lifetime on the wall that I shot in 1994. I can count on one hand the number of deer I have passed on. They just eat to good to pass them up. If I thought shooting a trophy buck was what deer hunting was all about I would have quit long ago. I have instilled the hunting lifestyle in my daughter and 3 sons and we are now teaching my grandchildren the same values that only the outdoors can provide.

As a follow up to my above post, I am also sick to death of other hunters telling me that my choice of weapon is not as sportsman like as what they choose to use. I am also sick to death of terms like "shooter buck" "nonshooter" "dink buck" "slick head" etc. I think that deer are fawns, does, button bucks, or bucks and deserve the respect to be called as such. I never heard those terms until the deer hunting shows promoting all kinds of must have deer hunting equipment started airing on TV. Sorry had to get that off my chest. Rant over for now.

Yes I think it was in World of the Whitetail Deer By Lenard Lee Rue III I have a Old Deer that shows up on my place every year late in the year I would bet she doesn't have any teeth to age her by I font even think about shooting her My Management plan includes viewing wildlife not just hunting and when I hunt. I always think about the Table. You start having a lot more fun when your focus is in other places besides just Big Bucks

Lol...
I didn't see a smiley and from your past posts I thought "Wow! Schoolmaster sure has had a big change."
As you know I'm an "opportunity" guy. I believe in as much hunting opportunity as the resource will allow. That is why I am against these restrictions that some folks want so they can maybe kill a buck with just a few more inches if bone on his head.

Of course the Deer herd is down in many areas, that was the goal of DNR agencies across the Country. Increased doe harvest is the main reason for the decline in deer numbers across many areas.
If people want more Bucks in places like Indiana they need to start providing or creating more habitat and areas where big Bucks can grow old.
In my opinion that is the biggest difference between Indiana and places like Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, etc. Indiana has far less cover/ habitat where bucks can hide and grow old. In my opinion one of the biggest reasons Kentucky produces so many large Bucks is because KY has so much cover and habitat across the state. Nearly 50% of Kentucky is covered by forest. It is relatively easy in many areas of KY for a Buck to live past 4.5 years old.
If Indiana had more cover, or if more hunters/ farmers let fields and fence rows grow up and created more habitat, there would be more cover for Bucks, so IN would start producing more bucks.
