Anyone ever put on any deer drives? I've heard people talk about it but it goes against everything I was taught about hunting.

If you want to run all the deer off of your property, so the neighbors can shoot them, go for it.

Done the right way they can be very effective.

When I was younger we would sometimes do a drive on the last day of gun season if we were shut out. It can be effective but I'm not a fan of doing it. First of all, shooting a moving deer results in poor shot placement and sometimes unrecovered deer. Secondly, any work you have been doing to improve the age structure/size of bucks may be for nothing with the "if it moves, shoot it" nature of many deer drivers. Lastly, and this is just my opinion based on one family in particular in my area, is that many (not all) people who drive deer have no respect for rules/regulations/bag limits or even property ownership.

Funny you should post this thread! I was just reading the December Outdoor Life, and they had an article about deer drives in it. My biggest 8 point and heaviest deer I ever killed was on a deer drive in a small thicket in Madison County with two other hunters. They work well along fence rows or small wood lots and thickets where you have access to several properties to hunt where they are bordered by big chunks of farm ground. But these areas are quickly disappearing with modern farming practices leaving little to no cover for the game. I gave it up several years ago when it kept getting harder to gain permission to hunt, all the fence rows and thickets were getting bulldozed, and every little woods has a house in it now. That's when I decided to buy my own hunting ground, and I haven't hunted Madison County for almost 10 years now. In the big woods it would be harder to put on successful deer drives, just my opinion. And I agree with the statement that chances are you would be running deer off of your property on to your neighbors. That has been my strategy for years on opening day of gun season, let the neighbors get restless and start moving around then start watching the deer come my way! They never have understood what driving an ATV to their stands does to push deer out! LOL

I'm not a fan of them at all. But... Quite a few years ago I was able to kill a 135" 10pt that I couldn't seem to get to leave his bed in daylight. I had bumped this deer twice in a week trying to set up close to him. Finally I called a buddy and told him a certain route to walk in the woods which led him within 20yds of that buck where he finally got up and headed my way. I was waiting in an area where he always escaped to a couple hundred yds away. After being bumped, the buck ran right to me and came to a stop less than 5-10yds from me where I shot him with my bow.

Not at all enjoyable to me either; however under the right circumstances they can be effective.

I have not been on a drive in 20 years. Very dangerous and not real good for the image of the sport. Just my opinion.

What is illegal?
Killing a deer while walking? While it is walking? While on the ground?
What have you heard is illegal about it? And do you really believe it is illegal?
It is not.

Guys on the property next to me doing this. Don't hear anything from them during the day. Then about 4pm you hear ATV and dogs. Running back and forth then all of a sudden ww3 breaks out. Doesn't. Strike me as either sport or hunting doing that.

Are they using dogs to run the deer? Pretty sure that is illegal. Pretty sure using the ATVs is illegal too.

A lease I used to hunt on as a guest used to drive a lot. They were successful and usually took about 20 deer a year with 8 guys and I even killed a couple of deer the 2 days a year I visited their lease. One of the things I didn't like is that the would want to start driving early like 8;30 in the morning if they werent seeing anything and did result in chasing a lot of wounded deer. Plus some of the guys were safe but some of them were not. 8 guys walking around on 200 acres with guns can get dangerous. One day I was walking with the buddy that always took me and doe jumped out and he unloaded the shotgun at it while it was about 150 yds away missing. About 20 seconds after the last shot one of the other guys came around the corner from the direction the bullets had gone 200 yds away and asked if he got it. I remember thinking what a moron to not be mad about the 5 slugs that had just headed in his general directionAfter that I only went back back and I stayed in a stand the whole time. Nothing illegal about it, if done properly it works but if not it is dangerous. Using dogs and atvs is illegal like Swilk said.

Been thinking about doing a drive on my urban property. I've been after a nice buck for the last two years, he mostly stays nocturnal and I know exactly where he beds. There's a larger property to the east that comes into an old railroad track. If we do it right I think we can push him right down that railroad path right under my stand and into our field. The things I'm worried about are, will that drive him off forever. Also I really don't want to make a bad shot with the Xbow and have to track him to far. There is a pretty busy highway about 1/4 mile away. This may just be a last resort for me this season. Haven't gotten an indiana buck yet and been putting in work for a long time. But he's big, one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen (probably doesn't say much). And I know he is probably going on 4 years old. So much to think about though.

If its not illegal, it should be. Thats not hunting, thats shooting. I'd rather hunt inside an enclosure, than be a part of an organized deer drive.
