I was finally able to get in a tree for the first time Monday morning. 30min in I see 3 bucks coming down the trail to me. The first to come in was a smallish 8pt followed by a nicer buck. Never did count points but he was outside the ears, nice time length and a dark colored rack. He made a scrape for about 5min at 30yds, licking branch, peeing in it, the whole 9yds. I decided he was a good enough buck, 30min in or not, and when he got to 20yds and turned his head I drew. The shot grazed his back and both bucks only went about 30yds and the smaller 8 immediately came right back to 15yds and the buck I missed cautiously came back to 35 and stood broadside for several minutes. I decided that was probably all the closer he was coming and drew again. That shot too grazed his back and both bucks took off but not real spooked. I was disgusted and had no idea what happened.
No sooner than I lost sight of them I see more legs coming from where they went. Turns out to be 4 does/yearlings and they slowly came in to 20yds. I figured I could redeem myself by atleast taking home a doe so I drew, settled and grazed her back too!! There I sat at 718am on my first sit of the year and I've emptied my 3 arrow quiver with nothing to show for it.
I felt good and steady during all 3 shots and had no clue what I had done wrong. Odds are I wouldn't have said anything on here about it but this afternoon I finally had a chance to shoot again and my 20yd group was good but 5" high. Everything was good until the night before so I'm not sure what got bumped or how it could have been off so much but atleast I've figured out what happened and why I missed now. I don't feel quite as bad about smacking those deer in the back now.
Gonna get back after it in the morning but with the cross bow. As of a few hours ago it's still dead on and I'll be sure not too bump the scope between now and the next deer that walks by.
