I thought he did a good job. His problem is that no parent wants to hear the truth. Half the kids in school are below average, and we need to stop treating them all like they're budding Einsteins. Most are going to be Walmart level workers. It's easy to make every kid look smart. Just lower the standards, which is what we've been doing for thirty years, and what we're doing all over again without Bennett.
Now parents can feel good about their kids again. We have a liberal dumocrap in office telling parents all their kids are just as smart as whips, and she will, by God, use tests that prove it.

Bottom line - he rigged the results so a big Republican campaign donor would look good.. Plus, they hired his wife. There is nothing else to it. Crook, cheater, liar and egomaniac. An attorney friend of mine in Indy says this is just the beginning of this scandal, much more to come.

Before its over he may be looking at jail time. I'm sure Jeb Bush is real happy with him since he is the one who pushed to bring him to Florida. Opponents will no doubt use this against Bush in his 2016 POTUS campaign.

What he did was get rid of a lot of liberal crap, and our schools have now gone back to the failed system we had for twenty years. Bottom line, liberals ruined our school system, and we're right back to a lot of fools pretending that their kids are getting a good education, even though most of them are functionally illiterate.

I am not going to argue with you James, but do you even know what we are talking about? Did you read the article? This is a huge national story. The man completely blew up the public trust and left everyone scrambling to sift through his corrupt mess. If you are arguing that his reform plan was good, that's fine, you are entitled to that opinion and lots of people probably agree with you. That's not what this is about.

The schools haven't gone back to anything yet - they are still running on his system. What is this about? One of his pet charter schools wasn't cutting it, so he cooked the books to cover it up. The fact that they hired his wife and donated a boxcar full of money to his campaign is, of course, just a coincidence.
Liberal? Here is liberal for you - the extreme right-wingers like Bennett and Daniels want no public education because they can contract it out to private schools and take kickbacks, I mean donations, from the people that run them. Plus, they can control the curriculum with little oversight. They have already arranged things so some "teachers" don't even need educations. Then, destroy the teachers unions so that teachers get paid less and have no power.
So what you get is a privatized school system that first and foremost is after profit. The politicians are all getting their palms greased, the teachers are all paid way less, and nobody is watching what kind of nutty crap is being taught. All paid for by our taxes.
Not one thing in the plan is about the public interest or better education. It is about money going to the right people, period.

Hey, the way you describe him, he has President potential. greyhair, I had one foot in the grave and the other on a peel just one week ago. To think that I could have died without hearing your strange and mysterious story is just unacceptable to me. You've heard of the dying man's wish, well I'm really dying and wish you'd share your story with us. minor clarification: I'm not totally sure how quickly I'm dying, but dying indeed.

I was a pretty decent student growing up in the seventies. I went to public schools in Indiana. My daughter is a college junior and I can tell you without a doubt that her Indiana public school education was far better than mine. What most people do not understand is that our schools in Indiana are providing quality learning opportunities for those that take advantage of what these schools have to offer and put in the effort needed to succeed. The media and our politicians all to often present our schools in a negative light while rarely dwelling on the positives of our schools. Mitch Daniels and Tony Bennett unfortunately have done very serious long range damage to our public schools for their own political gain.

Yes, our school systems are sold short.
I recall back in 1957 my family moved from Evansville to San Diego California for dad's work. This was half way through my senior year in high school. BIG time culture shock. What really amazed me was how far behind the high school out there was. I aced every subject there easily..
5 out of my 7 grand children have went on and got college degrees with one of the remaining two working on her degree. One went on and graduated medical school at one of the toughest med schools going.
I agree 110% with this....
It is a shame what MR. Bennett has done to cast a dark shadow on our school systems.

As a teacher, I can tell you first hand that kids in Indiana get a chance to have a great education. Our state standards are consistently near the top of the list of most demanding anywhere. That's right, all states have different standards, yet we are all judged against one another. So, basically, our kids take a much tougher test than kids in many states. As far as national education rankings go, did you know that most of the nations that rank ahead of us don't test all their kids like we do? That's right! Much of the world starts funneling students into different levels of schools such as trade schools where we try to force every kid into the college prep track. Therefore, many countries only test their best and brightest while in America, we test almost 100% of our students. If you compared the scores of our best and brightest against those of other nations, we'd be right there. These are the things that the media doesn't report. These are the things that are the most frustrating part of being a teacher...trying to combat the public perception. Those who spend any time visiting schools and witnessing first hand come away with a very different impression from what is generally reported. Statistics can be very misleading...if not flat out meaningless!
