Woody. I think we have decided on a team name for team 3. It is going to be "Team Falling Nuts" Thanks. It was a fun morning in the woods. I got there just after 7 and finished up around 10. I saw several but I just couldn't seem to hit them. Count 2 for Team Falling Nuts. Here is the pic. Mike

Man I need to get crackin!!! I saw 3 on the opener but they was just to elusive....maybe it was my 6yr old who couldn't keep his mouth quiet or keep from picking up every other stick to throw it back down....naw it couldn't be that. It was awesome to have both my boys out on opening day though. Made the mistake of being found by a nest of nymph lone star ticks. I pulled 20-25 off each of the boys. They still had fun though and thats what matters!!

Two more this morning for Team 2. I can't seem to break the "2 squirrels only per trip" habit. lol Saw three. Other one was with the second one I shot. No clue where it went but not another leaf moved for another hour. God Bless

Hit the pines behind the house at first light. Not soon after I spot a young one up a large pine, but I can't get a shot. As I am trying to get a shot his twin brother shows up on the other side. I roll him out of the tree and the other one moved just enough to give me a clean shot. Rolled him out too. Thirty minutes go by and I see this older squirrel coming right at me through the branches. I slip behind my tree, she sees me and move up and lays flat on a limb. I can barely make out her head, so I shoot. A limb in front of her starts moving back and forth. Oops. She didn't move, so with a minor adjustment I stick in her ear. Nothing happens for an hour, so I stalk through the pines and nothing. I decide to go back to the oak woods and set up on the ridge where number 3 got away from me on opening day. They were cutting there then. I set up and nothing is happening. As I am playing video poker on my phone (LOL) I see what looks like a squirrel head. I actually only look at my phone to bet when its my turn and it vibrates when its my turn. So I still spend a lot of time looking around. I slip my phone in my pocket and slide around the tree. Shoot this one in the head and it falls out of the tree, but another one that was hiding higher up comes down halfway and hides. I am waiting for it to move when I hear some barking. To my left is a squirrel looking right at me barking. I shoot it in the throat and then go to pick up my squirrels. As I go to get number 4, another squirrel scampers off. As I am still looking for number 4, I find number 5 and another squirrel runs over to the tree I was leaning against. Finally found number 4 as I was looking on the wrong fork of the tree. First limit of the season.

Are blacks worth anything point wise? I think its is legal game? Black squirrels are just grey squirrels with a gene mutation that makes them black. Not really any different than one person with black hair, and another with blond. So, yeah, a black squirrel is really just a grey. My son shot three or four last year.

There can also be a black version of the Fox Squirrel. There is a white version too, but I am not sure what species it is. I think it is mostly in this one town and they're protected. Seen a show on them once. Gray Fox Squirrel

I haven't been able to actually hit the woods yet, but was able to shoot this one out of the backyard with the air rifle Thursday night. Barbequed it to go along with supper. 1 squirrel for Team 1 please...

Add one for me to team two, fried smashed and smothered. watched him crawl out of the nest at 9:45, late start to a day. Just a foot note for those that follow this or find it interesting. The "moon phase" chart I "kinda watch" for feeding highs and lows shows this time of this month having later feeding habits in game. I watch the barometric pressure, temps, wind, moon phases, weather in general etc etc, just trying to find a pattern that leans a bit towards more productive days. Nope.....I don't have any enlightening finds like some who post online but it does make for interesting information. However, most of us agree the best time to hunt......is when you want to go hunting. While I follow all of it half-azzed, I know how easy it is to "out smart" yourself. I'm living proof. :-) HOME the first time this AM. Body parts that have not graciously aged need a break. Good luck and God Bless!

Got two nice fox squirrels last night and one this morning. Tried to upload pictures but its not working. It has defiantly slowed down the last couple days with the warmer temps and saw much more movement this morning than I have in the evenings. I have had most luck around the shag bark hickory tree's. this link might work though LINK

I am almost a carbon copy of maddog. I set up underneath the same tree I always do on opening day. Before its really light enough to shoot I feel some stuff fall out of the tree and drop on me. This happens like three times. Soon I hear some barking coming from above me. Sure enough, way up there is a huge nest. I hate shooting straight up. Trying to get a shot as this squirrel as it finally goes off on a limb when I hear barking above me again. I look up and see a tail sticking straight out like it was starched. Boom, first squirrel of the season is hit. The original squirrel runs through the limbs to the next tree and stops. 2nd squirrel hit. I go to the second squirrel and set up on the tree with the nest, but there were only the two there. I go up to a ridge that has been good to me in the past and set up. Way at the south end feeding in some upper branches is another squirrel. I ease through the under brush to as close as I can get. It starts coming down the branch and stops, giving me just a rib shot. I shoot and the squirrel takes two steps and comes out of the tree with a thud. I listen to hear if it moves off and I don't. I couldn't find that thing for nothing. Seen a fourth, set up on it, but after 15 minutes of waiting it decided to get out of Dodge completely. Too much brush to see where it went. I did hear another barking at something as I was waiting on the 4th to move, but I couldn't locate it. Didn't seem to be much activity today. First time I ever saw my breath on opening day of squirrel. In the first tree I was set up on, a hummingbird flying leaf to leaf for about 5 minutes. Drinking dew? Biggest bladder I have ever pulled out of a squirrel. Old squirrel with prostrate problems..
