Now is a good time to start learning flint, not the week before season opens. Don't be intimidated by the ignition system. It is almost 400 years old and most of the bugs have been worked out by now. Post some pictures so I can tell what you have along with any info or markings on the lock and barrel. Is it a custom or production rifle? Myself, my brother and several friends shoot flint with my brother shooting skeet and trap so we have considerable experience with running rock locks. I currently have 3, a .54 hunting rifle, a .50 match rifle and a .45 Yazel target pistol. I have success using English flints, real black powder and patched round ball. A can of 2f, 3f and 4f ( 4f prime only) will get you started. .45 is a great caliber as there are probably more sizes of ball available from .430 to .470. My .45 Green Mountain craplock will shoot almost anything I stuff down the barrel as long as it is tight patched. My rifle likes 50 grains of 2f with a .445 round ball wrapped in .018 ticking or .021 denim (100% cotton only). If I were to hunt with it I would bump up the powder to 90 grs. I use a 5/16 stainless steel rod at the range for cleaning and loading. Without knowing or measuring your barrel I can't give you much more info. Friendship june 8-16, go the first weekend as some of the dealers leave early in the week. I think they run a beginners bench where there is help available to get you going. www.nmlra.org/My .54

Finally got my .45 flint back running. I use a .440 ball, .015 patch and 60gr fffg. If I'm sitting good at the start of ML season this fall I may break it out; I'll likely up the load a little if I do.

Trapperdave, did you get to Friendship this year, or otherwise get some more info and supplies to get your .45 caliber flintlock shooting? Some local ML clubs also have flintlock shooters participate in their monthly (typical) matches. Some of these shooters can be a wealth of information, and will often gladly take the time to share it in a low pressure setting. www.nmlra.org
