I have been getting more and more into firearms over the last few years and want to make sure I care for them correctly. Do you gun nuts have any suggestions on a good cleaning kit and and any how- to books or videos? Thanks for any help.

They are not cheap but I like Dewey rods.

If you are just getting started, I'd suggest one of the all purpose kits that has the three piece cleaning rod, jags, brushes, solvent, etc. to clean anything from .22 cal thru 12ga. I would recommend a brass or stainless rod in lieu of the cheap aluminum rods, aluminum rods tend to break and bend.
Lots of options to choose from, just check out your local Gander Mountain, Cabelas, etc. You should be able to get set up decent for $50 or so for one of these kits. That will be a good start, then over time you will likely add all kinds of goodies; specialty rods, jags for all calibers, a gun vise, bore guides, additional cleaning chemicals, etc.

If at all possible, never, never clean from the muzzle. Using a good bore guide will keep the gunk from getting into the action or magazine.
I bought a tipton gun vise a while back and use it for a lot more than just cleaning them.
Nickle plated jag kit. No false readings when using copper remover.....
