I'll say I know nothing about what is available other than wired or wireless. But I need a couple of systems at a couple of different locations. Not sure what would work the best for the installation. Both locations are remote and it's unlikely that the law would get to either in a timely matter? Any suggestions?

What is available on site? I assume power but what about analog phone or a high speed internet connection?
They make several "economical" smart home solutions that can do everything from record audio and video.....play pre recorded audio....dial a cell phone/911.....turn on interior lights.....send a text message.....all from setting off a sensor.
Door, window and motion sensors can communicate to each other and the controller through wireless connectivity or the structures existing wiring.
Check out a site called smarthome.com......

Be easy enough to set up an unmonitored system that turns on all the lights and plays an audio of a shotgun sliding closed and the voice of Clint Eastwood growling "get off my lawn" when a sensor is tripped.

One of the locations has a land line phone and Windstream internet service. The other site has neither of those two items. I'd like to reciev alerts to a Droid phone.
Not sure if I would benefit from an alarm only or a camera/DVR system?
I wonder too if you recieve a alert and then get there while they are still in the building, and you send them to their maker if it could be considered premediatated homicide?

There are systems that send you a message as soon as the alarm is tripped - a buddy of mine has it on his work van for fear of someone stealing his tools. He has video set up so as soon as the alarm is tripped it tapes all the action and sends it to a remote location and it's all through cell phone.
I have no idea who sells them or the brand name but just to let you know that about anything you want can be had or designed for your needs.
I have a system on both my houses that we like. If even a window breaks while we are gone it sets off the alarm. I added motion sensors, smoke alarms, and door alarms. I have to pen up my beagle when we leave or she will set it off. It is all cellular and self contained wireless and even works during a power outage.
I know the big thing now is trail cams that send you the photos they take via your cell phone so all you have to go into the woods for is to replace the batteries...and it notifies you when those are low too!!! That is the cheap alternative with no alarm but you get notified when the camera is tripped and takes pix.
Guess it all depends on what you want to spend...happy hunting!!

Read about a guy who used a proximity sensor like the ones ontrail cams to trigger the taped sounds of an angry Rottweiler going nuts. He had a healthy chain attached to a porch railing and a large dog dish to add some realism.
He claimed no more break-ins after setting up the system.
Probably the lowest-cost alternative and likely pretty effective. Would be more fun if paired with the trail cam to watch the reactions.
