For the first time in Illinois, hunters went high-tech to report their whitetail deer kill to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. During the first firearm hunting season of the year, which ended Nov. 20, hunters registered their harvest by logging on to the agency's Web site, or calling a special hot line.
About 33,000 deer were reported on the first day of the season, with a peak use of the system early last Friday evening when more than 4,000 deer per hour were registered. Until this year, hunters had to drive to a deer check station to record their deer kill.
Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 77,051 deer during the opening season, about a 4 percent increase over the same period in 2004. More than 320,000 deer hunting permits were issued this fall, which included paid landowner permits.
"Weather conditions were good for the first weekend of firearm deer hunting and hunters saw a lot of deer," said Paul Shelton, Illinois Department of Natural Resources forest wildlife program manager. "We appreciate the hunters cooperating with the new system for checking in their deer."
Pike County in upstate Illinois led the state with the biggest deer harvest, with hunters bagging 2,340 deer. Around Southeastern Illinois, most totals were up from last year.
In Kentucky, the firearm deer hunting season wraps up today in zones 1 and 2, which includes all of Western Kentucky. Last year, Kentucky hunters harvested 124,752 whitetail deer, according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The Indiana firearm whitetail deer hunting season started Nov. 12 and runs through today. County-by-county harvest numbers for the current season were not immediately available.
Last year, Indiana hunters bagged 123,058 whitetail deer, an increase of 15 percent over the previous year.
