Yes you could use the Mauser but it's a long action and might not be your best choice. You can do a search of this forum for tons of info. A.J. Brown will make you one. Google it and you'll find his website.

If you are the least bit handy you could do this yourself using a Savage model 10 or Stevens 200 type action. I rebarrelled a Savage model 16 in 270 WSM to a 358 BFG. Savage rifles are surprisingly easy to do this kind of work on.

cedarthicket, How many sources are there for ammo in this caliber? The only thing that has me concerned as I'm not a handloader is the availability of ammo especially in the future if other calibers are added in Indiana and this one falls out of favor.I'd like to be confident that I could always get ammo if I had a gun chambered in this round.

You can get ammo. A.J. Brown has it. $50 a box average price. Save you brass and pay someone to reload them for you.

Currently I know of only one source of commercially loaded ammo, A.J. Brown Arms. However, I believe in early 2013 there will be another one. If and when that happens, I will post info on this web site. If you get a rifle chambered in .358 Hoosier, and the cartridge drastically falls out of favor, you could do as Timex noted. That is to save your brass and have someone else load it. Or, get a set of reloading dies from Hornady and load it yourself. Another alternative would be to have a competent gunsmith rechamber your rifle to the factory .358 Winchester. That should be a pretty easy job for a gunsmith experienced in chambering rifles.

AJ built my 358 Hoosier this summer. Im very happy with his craftsmanship and the finish product.
Mine was pricey but it could be done on a budget if need be.
AJ is on the top of the bolt action rifle game.

As far as I know, you can order a barrel from a barrel maker, as long as they have the chamber specs and "358 Hoosier" is engraved on the barrel. Then you can install the barrel on a Saveage Model 10 action that was chambered in 7-08, 358 Win, 308 Win, 243, etc., or you could pay a gunsmith to install it for you. Costs will vary based on the deal you can work on the donor action, smithing vs. not, etc.
Dies for reloading cost me $163 from Hornady. Brass is pretty easily made from 358 Win.

I have a MGM fluted barrel on my Encore, this was the first year hunting with it, and I am very pleased. I was able to take shot from 50 yards to over a hundred with no problem. My only dislike is one shot, I know one shot one kill, but I was given the chance twice this year after I shot the doe the others hung around and I could of taken another.

Just wondering if brass cases (.308 or .358) used to make this cartridge is getting hard to find, with all the panic buying going on.

409bullelk That's a pretty sharp rig. Encore? What's the deal with three rings? Just curious.

Yes it's an Encore, my second build up. The three rings is for looks, I had an extra ring so put it on, covers the gap (or makes smaller) the area between the bottom of scope and top of base.
