I love using my Encore 50cal muzzleloader but the last few deer I have killed I have not been able to see run off due to the smoke. I shoot Triple seven pellets and they shoot great but I am thinking of going to smokeless. Does anyone shoot smokeless out of their regular encore muzzleloader barells? If not What barell do you recommend that I buy to be able to shoot smokeless powder out of my Encore? I would like to stay with 50cal if possible. THANKS

One of several reasons I like Blackhorn 209, a lot less smoke. Not sure about barrels for smokeless power but would the receiver design also be strong enough to handle the smokeless?

Definitely DO NOT shoot smokeless out of your BP barrel. Of all the BP subs, Blackhorn 209 seems to produce the least smoke and it is the most consistent of any BP that I have tried and believe me I tried them all. I am shooting a Encore with a custom smokeless barrel and I love it! Wish I would have quit the smoking habit along time ago. Like deadeer said, check out doug's message board for all you could ever want to learn about smokeless ML's. Hornharvester is a mod over there. Call me if you want to chat about the Encore setup.

The smoke is a big part of what makes muzzleloading fun for me. You have to make doubly sure you're taking a good high percentage shot because you may/may not be able to see what happens after the trigger squeeze. The having to listen more than look is excitement in its self Nothing like hearing breaking limbs, leaves, crashing into a blowdown or even better hearing NOTHING at all because you dropped him in his tracks....or didn't you???

If you like smoke take up cigars. If you want to shoot the beat ML ever made, invest in a smokeless. For the Encore, order your barrel from Smokeless Muzzleloading Inc (SMI) located in Indiana. www.smokelessmuzzleloading.com/

You will not regret it! Did you get a .50 or .45 barrel? Or is either an option?

Havent ordered anything yet but will soon. I have always used a 50cal but was wondering about a 45cal. What do you all recommend?

As an alternative, Natchez Shooter Supply (www.NatchezSS.com) has Savage 10ML2 50 caliber smokeless muzzleloaders on sale. $560 for black stock/blue barrel, $600 for camo stock/blue barrel. I love my Encores and have a blackpowder ML rifle barrel and blackpowder ML Pistol barrel for it, but I have not hunted ML season with anything other than my Savage 10ML2 smokeless since I got it! Randy Wakeman and Toby Bridges both sponsor wesites specializing in use of the Savage 10ML2 smokeless rifle. Used their suggested powder/sabot/bullet combination and never needed to change it.

Just to throw a few more things out there. With the SMI barrel, you will be getting a top quality product (from what guys are saying, have heard no complaints about that.) Lots of reports that they are VERY slow in turn around time though. Something to consider. They also use their own breech plug design. Also, another option guys are using is buying a TC or Bergara 45/70 barrel, and having it threaded for a breechplug either by SMI or a member from Dougs message board (screen name Slufoot) using a Savage breechplug. As for the Savage 10ml2, it is a hit or miss with barrel quality regarding accuracy, from what is being said. Many of us, me included, have awesome shooting stock Savages, but not always the case. Likely more guys have problems from not knowing the tips and tricks involved with smokeless muzzleloading. There is ALOT of little things to learn, but nothing complicated at all once you understand it. The 45 cal is the hot caliber going right now. With a 40 cal 195gr Barnes or 200gr Hdy SST, you can achieve between 2600-3000 fps depending on load. I have the Savage in 50 cal and a Rem 700ml converted to smokeless in 45 cal. They both shoot awesome. I have killed over 20 deer with the Savage, 2 of them over 300 yds, and most fold right in their tracks. So far I have only killed one at 135yd with the 45, but I practice out to 400yd with it (new for this season). Either way, you would not be sorry. Whatever you do, to save yourself lots of time, money, and headache, please try to buddy up with an experienced smokeless user. It will make your investment so much more rewarding. Even if not in person, by e-mail or phone call, it will go along ways towards your outcome. So many guys will tell you, it is so addicting once you start. That is true. The first year I got my Savage, I burned over 8lbs of powder thru it, trying different loads and having the time of my life. Of course you don't have to go overboard like that, as there are many established loads that are very user friendly. So good luck with whatever route you decide.

Also Fullrut, I was woundering about this 2. I have noticed a lot of people talking about their favorite slug gun be it a Savage bolt action to a 870 pump. I have a TC Encore muzzleloader and have seen people sell different rifle barrels on here. I haven't come across any discussion about an Encore rifled slug barrel at all though. I would imagine that a rifled slug barrel with a scope on an Encore should be a very accurate setup. Does anybody have any experience? It appears the slug barrels are fairly pricey for the Encore. Also any opinions on a 20 vs 12 gauge in that setup? I would think that the 20 gauge might be a little flatter shooting at longer distances, but don't really know for sure.

I have one, it shoots great. But still use the SMI barrel in front of it in places where I want a more reliable, longer range and harder hitting machine, such as Illinois. And a 20 gauge slug does not compare to modern 12ga. offerings very well. They have improvee lately but have not gotten there yet.

My dad has a 20ga slug barrel for the encore. He used it til this year when he switched to a 358wssm. Shot well but IMO is not worthy compared to a 12ga or todays rifles. Hed probably sell it as I see him never using it again not that we both use high powered rifles. Can't wait to go smokeless. Too many advantages to not switch.

Taked to another Savage smokeless owner over Christmas and he mentioned an article on several blackpowder rifles being tested (by Randy Wakeman, I think) in both 45 and 50 caliber. He found several 50 calibers that were MOA accurate right out of the box (Knight, Halleck, Savage, TC, etc), but did NOT get the same accuracy in 45 caliber, even if the rifle used the same action and stock as the 50 caliber. He didn't know why.

Also my buddy mentioned an article that answered your original question "Can I use smokeless in my blackpowder Encore barrel?" www.chuckhawks.com/smokeless_thompson.htmInteresting, because he points out some safety factors built into the Savage that would not be present in ANY Encore barrel because of the design of the frame. You might as well do some research now that Indiana muzzleloading season is over. LOL
