well i was looking for a cheap shotgun and at Dicks they have the mossberg maverick 88 for $219 but it has a 18.5 inch barrel cylinder bore. if i was to get this gun it would be used for deer hunting so i am wonder how this gun would shoot slugs. i used to have a remington 870 12ga with a 24 inch barrel smooth bore tht shot pretty good out to 100 yards, but my dad ended up selling it so now im stuck with my old single shot and i mean old! lol ive heard that most mossberg 500 parts will work with the maverick 88, so if i have to in the future i could get a new barrel for it. but im just wondering how the 18.5 inch would do with slugs at 50 and 100 yards. thanks

Should be fine at 50 - you'd have to shoot it at 100, play with the ammo and see what it will do - hard to predict for sure.

Is this a slug barrel with rifle sights? If so, I'd guess it will shoot slugs pretty well. Some rifled slugs may shoot a little better than others, but most should be accurate enough to shoot deer out to 75 yds. If the gun does not have rifle sights, I'd save a few more pennies and get a Mossberg 500 combo with a field barrel and a slug barrel.
Just looked at the Maverick website, and the only model I saw with 18.5 inch cylinder bore was the Security model. I would not recommend that gun for deer hunting. If you already had one and wanted to try to mount some decent sights on it, that might be worth trying. There are better choices out there if you are buying a new gun to hunt with. Get something with rifle sights already on the gun, or better yet, get one that has the cantilever scope mount on a fully rifled barrel.

If you are looking for a multi-use gun with decent accuracy a Mossberg combo would be a better choice. I think they sell for about $350.00 @ Dicks and in the long run will cost a bit more but serve you better.
If you buy the maverick and then have to buy a slug barrel to get the accuracy you want, you'll end up spending more than the combo would have cost you to begin with.
FWIW (and I learned this lesson the hard way), buy what you want once instead of saving a few bucks and trying to "make due". In the long run, you'll sell off what you purchased (and lose money) and buy something else. So in the end, it'll cost more.
If you don't have the money now. Save it or try or maybe find the gun you really want used.

I have a maverick 88, but I just use it for dove, crow, and turkey hunting. have thought about getting a slug barrel for it to have a multi-shot gun, but I just stick with my muzzie for deer hunting. It's a pretty good gun for the money though. Just a side note, see if you can find it somewhere else until Dick's decides to support everything to do with the second amendment.

With the bead sight in hunting conditions will take longer to accurately aim/point IMO. I am not sure if all 88 and 500 parts are interchangeable. If it is not drilled and tapped for scope you might be able to get a cantilever mount from Brownell's and have a gunsmith silver solder it on for a scope mount. It might turn into a decent slug gun for 75 - 100 yards. If you got the 500 combo you could have an actual smooth bore barrel with choke options and a rifled barrel for longer range slug hunting.
