Hello all.
I am in the market for a rifle and want to know what others use and opinions about them. I really want a JM version of the Marlin 1894 SS 44 mag. I can get one now for around $800 but that is a bit out of my league.
I am thinking either lever or bolt action. I currently own a ML, so I am just looking for something accurate and that will carry more than 1 round.
As for the 1894, I have never shot one, but all the reviews are amazing prior to Remington buying Marlin.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Mike

I have a 94 in 44 and really like hunting with it, light and fast handling. With WW white box ammo I could get 2-3 inch groups at 100 yds but I can get sub-MOA with my handloads. I have heard numerous issues with them and I had to send mine back to Marlin to have them polish the chamber throat so it would feed properly.

I had a 2007 SS 1894 44Mag - keyholed everything. Sent it back to the factory; came back now got 7-8" with "good" ammo. Worse with others. It went away. I now own a blued 1991 1894 - It shoots just fine. Took a shot with it before I took it out hunting last night. 1" high at 50yds dead center left & right, just like always.

Your best .44 magnum rifle would be a Ruger 77/44 bolt action.

The 1894's are ok, never known for benchrest quality but good hunters. But if your thinking about spend the big bucks for a JM, I'd instead go with one of the wildcats.

Look below in modern firearms or search for 358 Hoosier or 358 wssm.

358 Win, is not legal unless trimmed Man, you are talking to a total noob to guns. Sorry. Can you tell me what you mean by trimmed? Are you talking about custom loads? Thanks again. Mike

Case length has to be 1.8" or less. In a nut shell, if your considering a wildcat, the 358 Hoosier will likely end up costing you less than the others and seems to be as comparable. And is far better than the .44 mag.

It sounds like I found my next gun then. :-) Thank you guys. I was reading up in the modern firearms about the wildcats. There was a guy who knocked down a deer at 275 yards on opening day with his 358 Hoosier. DANG!
I am sending Alan an email right now.

I did the same thing this year, and got opinions on here. I bought the H&R 44 Mag. Single Shot. Like you I wanted something that would hold more than one shot. However I wanted to try out the 44mag thing before dropping $600-$1000 on a bolt or lever. The 44mag I bought turns out that I absolutely love it. I probably wont get the bolt or lever for awhile. Dick's had them the cheapest at $250. If I decide to upgrade I'll get the Ruger 44mag Bolt.

My father and I both have TC Encores in 358 wssm. I haven't had a chance at a deer this year ,but he shot a nice 8 pt @ 270 yds. Ours are the 1.625 version, they have added a 1.8 version this year. Just Hunt out of Wabash, In. is where ours are from.

Dicks in Lafayette had the H&R .44 rem mag on sale this week for $239 plus tax out the door. They will out shoot the 77/44 with the 225 grn FTX and most other loads as well.

Does anyone know if the H&R Handi Rifle .243 will work for the 358 conversion?
Thanks. Mike

If you are looking to due a H&R conversion go with a 45-70 and convert to smokeless and have a gun you can use all season that will outperform any of the wildcats that I am aware of and alot cheaper to shoot!
