Here's the deal. I am now shooting an H&R .44 Mag. It shoots just fine; it's more accurate than I think I can shoot. However I've always wanted a Ruger 77/44 but have never convinced myself to spend the money on a deer rifle I only use a few weeks of the year. A little shop down the road from me has a brand new in the box Ruger 77/44 with the WOOD stock. I've only seen these new rifles in the synthetic stocks. The guy behind the counter said Ruger had some left over barrels and actions for the 77/44 and decided to put some wood stocks on them. Apparently there's only been around 1000 of these new ones made with the wood stocks. He's asking $749.99 and has it on hold for me right now...what would you guys do?

Does this one have the stainless barrel? I know they uses to make these with wood and blue barrel before they came out with the stainless/synthetic version

No this has a blued barrel. I've been doing a little light research and think maybe they aren't brand new; just new/old stock released by Ruger.

I'm not aware of the new models having a wood stock. Price seems kind of steep but they are real nice guns I've got this little beauty sitting in my lap waiting for Mr. Buck to come along. Ruger .44 Mag Carbine. Early model tube fed.

Man Woody you are good. Got the Pentax logo right in focus too LOL. Seriously that is a nice crisp pic from a cell phone. Boilermaker if you want the 77 and like it go for it. Forget the 1-1000 stuff because as soon as you take it hunting or shoot it any value it may have had will be lost for several years. If you just want a 77 to hunt with I think the Stainless are less.

I think I'm gonna go check out the stainless / composite instead...thanks everyone for the help! Woody, that is a dime-piece for sure. I ran across one of the Ruger .44 carbines one time; he wanted me to see this "neat gun" a family member had given him. The thing had never been fired! Every dollar figure I threw out trying to buy it was shot down lol.

I currently own the stainless/synthetic version as well as the carbine like Woody has shown, I dont get it out much anymore though, but as far as the 77/44 goes I love mine, very light weight and short easy to carry, stainless, low maintenance. I had a new trigger put into mine and it shoots better than I can. Have had mine for the past two deer seasons, 3 shots, three dead deer. None ran further than 50 yds. They didnt have the stainless/camo stock out when I bought mine or I would have grabbed one of those. I think they are sweet looking. I may end up getting my stock done in hydro graphic.

What's the range and groupings on the 44 mag rifles?
Thinking about buying one.

I've got my H&R sighted out to 100 yards because I won't ever shoot past that. I can put 3 in a 3" dia. circle when it's in the vise

Best I have done with mine @100yds with front on sand bags was about 2.5" with 3 out of five shots touching, 3.5-4" easy all day long. Would really love to try mine out of a lead sled or something of that nature.

The ruger's barrel is fairly thin walled. Shot groupings begin to suffer in mine if I don't let the barrel cool down to ambient temp. Nothing horrible but a noticeable difference at 100 yds.

My 13 yr old son has shot a 3 shot, 3" group at 125 yds with his k77/44 using PMC 180 gr. JHP from benchrested sitting in a duplicate stand base we have for practice. Stainless is the way to go.
