I'm seeing a good number of deer being posted on here that were taken by crossbows. What is your guess on how many deer crossbowers will take this season?

More than I ever imagined .... not necessarily due to new hunters but I know a few guys who have put down the compound and taken a xbow.
If I know a few in my little circle of hunting buddies I can guess that the trend continues state wide. My bet is around that 2500 mark.

That's the bad thing about crossbows too many guys " put down the compound and take crossbow"...it's easier, for the instant gratification kids who don't want to work at learning to properly shoot a compound ... Just want something to pick up aim and shoot like a gun...too much hard stuff to learn with compound, good form, follow through, anchor points, releasing, tuning you bow rest, etc....

talked to a state deer biologist last night he said early archery portion deer checked in was almost double from last year at the stations he has worked. Im sure its not all the dreaded x factor but it has to have made a significant impact.

[quote good form, follow through, anchor points, releasing, tuning you bow rest, etc....[/quote]
Besides the anchor point these are exactly what I work on while practicing with my crossbow

To be honest, I was about as anti-crossbow as it gets until allowed my daughter to hunt with me. I was never against the youths, disabled or people that are just unable to use a vertical bow for whatever reason. My problem with them is like Ridgerunner said, the people that have never put the hard work and effort into learning how to properly shoot a vertical bow and dealt with the realities of true bow hunting. Unfortunately there's no way to regulate who can and who can't use them do it's here to stay.

I voted the highest number. Of four bowhunters on my work shift, I'm the only one who didn't switch. One guy was kinda crippled up and the other two thought that there was a great advantage in switching.
I would think that there would be a slight uptick due to a few more kids hunting and perhaps a few older hunters hunting again.
A humorous note: I told all three guys when they were considering their purchases that they would need new targets and probably a cocking aid of some sort, because crossbows of hunting quality were by necessity heavy.
Later, all three came to me and said, "I couldn't cock that thing!" & "I'm gonna need a new target!" lol

For those of you who don't want to use a crossbow it's really simple....don't use a crossbow.
But I always find it funny that many of those who complain don't mind the fact that they are carrying around an 80% let off compound with fiber optic sights, using a mechanical release while sitting over a spot (more likely than not) that was chosen with the help of a game camera.........
But yet somehow an xbow is the straw that broke the camels back when it comes to crossing the line from a technology or "ease of use" standpoint........
BTW, P&Y wouldn't admit deer killed from 80% let off compounds for years either and they caved on that. As more and more states legalize the xbow for hunting seasons they will likely cave to that pressure as well.
Times change and the beauty of it is, you can change it if you wish to or stay "old school" and shoot a longbow if that makes you happy.

Who cares whT they accept in their book? Not I that is for sure....

Well said jjas. Me and a buddy of mine were talking anout this same subject the other day at work. We both agreed that the weapon you choose is only a personel prefernce. If you sit in the woods under any weather conditions, put your time into scouting then weapons don't matter. The most vaulable thing about hunting to me is spending time with family and friends. If they want to use a crossbow that's fine with me as long as everybody enjoys the time in the field. As far as record books go, its nice seein your name in the book but the true trophy is holding your harvest in the field no matter how big or small or what weapon you took it with and the memories that come from it. Happy huntin to all!

Oh... By the way this is not a thread about crossbow legalization. That has been decided.
Make your guess and discuss that guess or other's guesses but lets stay on topic..
Thanks...

Sorry woody. Didn't mean to stray just like jjas point. The people I hunt with and around didn't take up crossbows as of yet. I think it'll be just up a tad from last year.

I only know of one crossbow kill here, by someone that uses a vertical bow also. It's been a rough season here............hey gun shots are WAY down, maybe all the gun hunters have taken up crossbows??? (NOT) A crossbow does not equal instant sucess. I guarantee that they mess with crossbows and there will be a uproar that the DNR has not heard before.

There will come a day when I can't use my bow anymore. And I'm sure I will get a crossbow as I enjoy hunting in early season and during pre rut. Who care's what pope and young think's?? My last 4 bow kill's all score over 125" and I could care less about paying someone to enter my name in "THEIR book". I enjoy the hunt and it's about me and the deer, not about paying someone to read my name in a book.

I chose 2500+ because I know 4 people that are now using crossbow and between them, they have taken 11 deer. Two are a land owner and his wife and they have taken 7 between the two of them.
