I've always heard that all bucks will rub small trees but only big bucks rub really big trees. I don't know how true that is, but I've tended to believe it.

ok...if its false does that mean that big bucks will make rubs on smaller trees as well? I have seen a TON of smaller trees just torn to pieces in my woods

yes....both small and big bucks will rub small samlings and trees but if you find a big tree rubbed well, then yyou can bank on it being a big buck.

alright I have always wondered about that...I've seen some big trees rubbed as well but havent stumbled acrossed any yet this year...but man are they tearing up the saplings at my place this year! I hunt around 70 acres and lately I've been hunting the northern part of the property. I decided to check out the back last week and was shocked by all the rubs on my walk out...Now I am torn on which stand to hunt!

The 135-140" buck that I killed worked a small scrape so I have to be in the false camp.

I cannot comment on personal experience about big bucks and large trees as far as rubs go. However, I have actually hunted large scrapes and seen up to 4 different bucks come to large scrapes. I refer to these as community scrapes more than one buck will use them and they continue to get larger after each different buck uses them or comes back to them.

Define big buck. Define big rub. Define big scrape.

It's deer hunting. Everything you think you have figured out they will prove you wrong.
Have a great year.

So HoosierHunter... Are you then confirming that, indeed, only monster bucks rub big trees? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

By the way. I used to have access to a property with a hugh sign post. I harvested 4 pope and young deer from that very spot. During the rut. Every buck that passed that tree rubbed on it. I would strongly suggest that if that is your property. To locate a stand close to it and let the good time's start.

Only one of those I CONSIDER to be big (aka heavy older buck) buck is a large tree for rubs, approx 4-7 inches in diameter, that is not just "rubbed" but literally shredded or large splinters sticking out from it, worn an inch deep or so.
Lots of energy going into that kind of tree destruction IMHO and only ones Ive SEEN rubbing trees this size ARE big bucks. 200 lb ish is big to me.
A REALLY large scrape (6 foot or more) to me is indication more than one buck is using it. Ive seen as many as four hit a single scrap of this size in one day. More wouldnt surprise me a bit, God Bless

I'm not sure that bucks can read rules. Even if they could I wonder what the penality would be for violating the rule.

In 42 years of deer hunting I know one thing for certain- there are no absolutes in deer hunting.
YMMV...

Have you ever seen a 6" bass jump on a muskie lure before? I have, (and he could barely get his mouth on the hook) but it isn't the norm by any means. Sorry for the bad analogy
Large trees getting rubbed raw is predominately larger deer (imo). Yes.....a smaller bucks can come and rub on the same tree, but the damage is mostly being done by the bigger ones.
Small saplines getting shreaded can happen by small bucks as well as larger bucks.
To me....scrapes regardless of the size won't define deer size. They are pawing at the ground, and all of them have the ability to do it the same.
