ok, i have been dealing with this issue as far back as i can remember and i just got to ask you guys your opinion....Are you afraid of the dark? i hate going to my stand in the mornings and leaving my stand in the evening. im not afraid of make believe monsters or ghosts or anything like that, im afraid of animals attacking me. it takes everything i have to walk to and from my stand when its dark. i know over the years i bet i have blown chances at some nice deer because i have got out of my stand before sunset just so i can beat the darkness. now you guys may all laugh at me but i can guarantee i am not alone. the only difference is im actually admitting this fear i have. so i want to know how many of you on here are afraid of the dark and how many of you use to have this problem and how you overcame it? this issue has really got in my way of hunting and im tired of it...

I've never had really bad fear of the dark, I've been a little nervous but a really good flashligh goes a long way to comforting the nerves. My fear is getting hurt in the dark and some one not being able to find me but I just take it slow and easy.

No I have no fear of morning darkness going to my stand. Afterall there is nothing in the dark that isn't in the light of day. Just be careful and watch your step when going to your stand. More important know your hunting area before attempting to hunt.

Used to be as a kid. Was out turkey hunting with my dad one day and he caught me checking our backtrail. Told me, " Son. Ain't nothing going to get you in the dark that can't get you in the light. "

Not really but I usually get out of my stand before it gets too dark to hunt especially if I am in one I have to climb up a ladder or steps. I've even killed a few deer after climbing out of my stand and sneaking out to the edge of the field where there was more light to see. I just feel more comfortable being able to see climbing down. No problem in the morning.
When I hunt places I am unfamiliar with I will wait for daylight and leave so I can pick out a decent stand location and before dark if there is a chance I might get lost. Done both of those and it just isn't worth it to me to pick a bum spot and have to move in after daylight and the idea of getting lost, even though it would be near impossible to get really lost in most parts of Indiana I still have a healthy respect for that.

Mornings are fine, walking out in the evenings is what gets me. I think for me in the morning I know the worst that could happen is I get turned around and sit in the dark for an hour. Leaving at night if you get lost it is going to be a long night.

I'm not....but have seen a bunch of guys that are. Followed coondogs nearly every night for about 15 years in my younger days helped out no doubt. But if you figure that there is absolutely nothing out at night that you can't encounter during the daytime hours, there is nothing to fear. With todays gadgets and GPS smartphones, you can't get lost, as long as you have battery power.

The thing that gets me, mostly in the evenings, is dogs. Years ago I heard them bark as I entered the field that I was parked on the other side of. They were about 300 yards away at a house. Next time I heard them they were about 10 yards and scared the crap out of me. I'm pretty sure my yell was louder than their bark. It used to be worse than it is now, somehow the problem seems to take care of itself by about the first of gun season.

You're not hunting in Africa, are you? If not, there's nothing to hurt you unless there is someone breaking into your truck when you get out of the woods.

Not afraid of the dark. I like to walk in and out without a flashlight. The only thing that remotely concerns me is that some moron may take a shot at me.

Don't want to end my season with a torn acl or sprained ankle. If I am trying to sneak in on turkeys, I will cary a walking stick

You are definitely losing the best time to kill a deer by leaving at sunset. As others said the said. Critters that roam at night are there doing the day. Get you a nice strong beamed light and carry a handgun if you have one. My wife always asked if I was scared in the dark in the woods I tell her " Nope, because I'm the meant SOB out there."

My biggest issue is more about falling... being an "older geezer" and "bigger than the average bear" I am concerned about tripping over vines or branches and falling... (Injured my left hand in a fall last year that has not healed and will use a crossbow until I can get it worked on...).. I bowhunted for elk in CO for five weeks last year and had no issue travelling in the dark.. used my GPS... of course the mountains I hunted nowhere near the ground clutter(grapevines, blackberry, and multi-flora rose like our Indiana creek bottoms). I also got a good Petzel head lamp that is carbon and weighs next to nothing to help guide my size 13's thru the thick stuff.

Night doesn't bother me. As others have said nothing is out there at night that wasn't there to begin with. But being someone whom prefers a 3rd shift job could be part of it. However I am terrified of losing a deer at dusk, I generally won't sit too late in evenings. Only to see deer when I drive when I go to town a few minutes later. And there is the climbing down risk in dark, but you can fall at any time. I always have someone who knows where I'm at, and what aprox. time I'll be up. My favorite time is just before sunrise in the morning and the birds wake up and critters start scurrying around, I like to be out before that at least 45 minutes.

Nope - My uncle had me going out in the dark when I was just a kid so I used to hearing the rustling of leaves when walking out. Hte most scared I have ever been hunting though is when I spooked a bunch of deer while walking out to my stand one morning and one ran about 5 yards in front of me a full speed. That freaked me out a little.
